Parking fine or illegal advertising or something else?

p1 3 August 2012 32

While rolling down the GDE this morning (yes, I know it isn’t really an extension anymore, but GD doesn’t sound as good) I witnessed a scene I shall now describe (as I was operating a motor vehicle and couldn’t use my camera).

Parked on the ample verge, at 90° to the roadway, was a ute with a large billboard advertising the candadacy of one Tom Sefton. Near this van was a man dressed in the uniform of an ACT Government parking inspector. He was operating what appeared to be a camera (taking photos of the vehicle).

So, some questions:

    — will the ute be booked for illegal parking?
    — will the liberal party be booked for breaking some sort of advertising law?
    — is there some other potential infraction they might get?
    — is this a case of the current Labor/Green Junta using the apparatus of the state to brutally suppress opposing voices?

Anyone in the party wanna let us know if it actually got a ticket?

If you are right, this also spells trouble for the ACT Pirates’ Galleon.

I’m guessing because there are a lot of signs that say No Parking between Belconnen Way and Ginninderra Drive, he will be getting a ticket.

You are just an apologist for what the original poster correctly described as “a case of the current Labor/Green Junta using the apparatus of the state to brutally suppress opposing voices…”

I draw your attention to the massive signs on either side of the road Northbound on GD about 800m from the Belco Way overpass which state:

‘[No Stopping] Area – Between Belconnen Way and Ginninderra Dr”

No conspiracy to it, just an illiterate candidate who will easily pay the fine.

That is what I thought. But for the couple of hundred dollars (at the most) that a parking ticket might run too, it is pretty cheap advertising for them.

Pretty crappy advertising though, you must admit. I shudder to think that anybody in Canberra would base their decisions at the polling booth on whether or not they saw a sign board on the side of the road. Last territory election I pulled down Gulia with a G’s sign from a road near my house and peed on it.

Considering a similar stunt was performed a few mornings back on the parkway (before the arboretum) which caused a traffic jam (for some reason, people had to slow down to <60 to see/read it), I for one will be voting *against* anyone I see advertising on the road side, incl this dude. I think it was the same guy in both cases. Can anyone confirm?
So, it might be free advertising, but it is negative advertising!

Now that is democracy in action.

Personally, I shudder to think that I might share a polling booth with someone who chooses to express their political views via urination, but I guess that’s just democracy at work…

And you’re all now discussing the candidate.

His goal has been achieved.

God I love it when someone compares parking enforcement to an oppressive military government that has questionable constitutional validity.

No really it’s great.

I was a teenager then, couldn’t vote :p And I’ll be the first to admit that what I did was stupid and childish.

,,,was fun though 😀

Did you know, Tom Sefton has the same number of syllables in his name as Matt Damon?

Highlighting his unsuitability for public office?

No to be unsuitable for public office, he would have to be convicted of drink driving while serving as the Police Minister.

Brilliant. Thank you 🙂

I’ve seen it parked there every day and wondered why it doesn’t get towed away – like any other abandoned vehicle parked by the side of a major road?

Until people mentioned the name here, I didn’t remember it so the “advertising” isn’t that effective. To me it’s just some guy’s big head on a poster on an illegally parked vehicle.

And just another guy who wants to be paid to sit around spouting rhetoric.

Just spoke to Tom, to answer one of the original questions he did get a ticket, about $83 I think. I don’t think he will be parking the ute in that section of the GDE again. He feels happy to make the $83 donation to the massive Labor gov blow out on costing for the GDE. I think it is an effective way to get his name put in the electorate. For the record I think he’s a good bloke and deserves to get elected, I feel happy voting for a bloke who has multiple degrees and has done two tours of duty in Afghanistan. No doubt a lot of rioters will get the opportunity to meet him at local shops or at your door step before the election.

KB1971 KB1971 8:37 pm 03 Aug 12

Can you then please tell him & his mates to stop parking on the roadsides distracting traffic?

There was an older bald bloke doing this at the start of the Parkway in peak our. Stupid.
