Plenty of room for a wheelchair to get around there. I do creative parking like that all the time, especially in the smaller shopping centres like Oconner. It’s easy enough to do in a way that doesn’t inconvenience people (people who are actually walking near your car rather than spying from above) and its usually a 2 minute run into the IGA for some milk. The mums in the minivan behind me with 3 kids don’t mind if I drive past the only open carspace and do a creative park. In fact, I’ve even been thanked for it.

Being miserable about other people doing things that don’t really affect you is a crappy way to live life.

But where do you draw the line? Actually, you don’t have to, it’s already been drawn on the ground for us all.

I draw the line at the point where I feel I would be inconvenienced should I be in the shoes (or on the wheels) of others in the vicinity. I rely on a pretty finely tuned sense of judgement that has matured over 32 years of use and that has yet to let me down. I’m confident enough about my own morals that I need not worry about whether someone’s having a cry just for the sake of having a cry. I get over things easily and get on with life without allowing small petty things to eat me up inside.

In the end, for me it comes down to the principle of “does it negatively affect anyone else?” if yes, then you’re doing something wrong.

I guess the problem is that the average punter can’t be relied upon to make that judgement, which is why we have rules. If you think the world should be just abide by common sense then it’s the idiots that you need to take it up with.

Yeah that’s how I think it should be really. If you go to Asia, it seems chaotic because they don’t have all of these rules, but they are just responsible to eachother at an individual level. If you park your scooter so it’s blocking people in, they will kick it over and go around it lol. There are no strict rules about the exact positioning of things. And it works to a large extent. You won’t find people parking and blocking someone else in because they don’t want to be yelled at or bashed for it by others. The end result is that there is no yelling, bashing, no parking in of anyone and no fines and no worries about parking. For Canberra, it’s good to have lines so that you don’t get people leaving gaps just too small to fit a car and you can maximise the parking available, but it isn’t a big deal if someone found another place to park that doesn’t inconvenience anyone else. Really, they should just fix that spot so that it’s permanently available for people to use, even if it’s a slightly smaller space then the others.

But in this case in Canberra, I just reckon there’s no point even thinking about it if it hasn’t inconvenienced anyone. If it has, then we can all hate on them and leave a note on their window telling them to not be selfish etc.

Or it could just a be bit of equally harmless fun to take the piss out of someone and stereotype as to who they might be.

This is the internet, it’s serious business!

These parking ones usually seem to be pictures of people parking in a way that doesn’t inconvenience anyone but would technically be in breach of some rule. If this were another country not so obsessed with rules, nobody would look twice at this. People would actually be asking questions like “which idiot put that path at an angle such that a car space is wasted, how inefficient” They could have made that path so that there could be a full space there without any issue.

In the end, for me it comes down to the principle of “does it negatively affect anyone else?” if yes, then you’re doing something wrong. If no, then it’s not a problem and people should get over it. That applies to anything really. Who is affected by this parking? nobody. I think you could actually argue that the person who designed the carpark layout may be inconveniencing many people by not designing it in such a way that there is an extra carpark.

I like how Mr Gillespie has a bitch whenever a “parking x style” post goes up. I can only assume he does this sort of thing all the time and is terrified he’ll get caught and ridiculed on the internet.

I’d love to be the person who snaps that shot.

Do you like living dangerously?

Would you like to get caught taking that shot, and get thumped (or worse)?

You never know who you are dealing with. The person parking the car could be some kind of monster.

I never said it was me who parks my car in the pictures. What I’m saying is, you are taking unnecessary risks with your own personal safety by taking shots like these.

Last time I checked it wasn’t illegal to take as many photographs of cars as you pleased. Yet is is very illegal to threaten violence to someone in this country.

It might not be illegal to take pics of cars but you can be threatened with violence. A couple of months ago there was a green ute for sale parked outside Bridgestone Tyres in Phillip. I took a few pics of the ute to get a shot of the phone number on the window as I wanted to buy it. The owner came out and very aggressively told me to delete all the pictures as he didn’t want his number plate photographed. The alarm bells began ringing then about the ute’s (and his) history. When I said it was a new camera and I didn’t yet know how to delete pics he grabbed it off me and deleted everything on the camera.

Needless to say I didn’t buy the ute.

Most of yall fit into two categories:

1 – “Waaaaa! Waaaaaa! That car is using 1x1m of space not allocated for the use! I know I can’t see anyone who has been adversely affected, but won’t someone think of the children!?

And

2 – “haha, I’m such a better person than this idiot. He can’t even park his car, he MUST be some brogan trying to get some kind of bogan item. I’m so much better than that!”

Such a wank. Get over yourselves 😉

Of course there’s also the rest of us who couldn’t give a rats about it. Not you of course, you seem fired up.

Yep, going by exclamation marks I’d say ppt1ne is the most excited person here.

Oh dear I’m sure he will regret doing that don’t they lock folk up in AMC for parking like that in O’Connor also how did a car like that even get in to O’Connor in the first place

Cannot believe I am defending Mr Gillespie, but what he wrote was no threat and for once what he wrote was actually quite sensible (only the post with the warning mind you). Basically you have no idea who owns that vehicle or what they are likely to do if they saw you taking a picture. Knowing the way some people behave around this city now a punch in the head may well be on the cards.

In this particular situation, there is room to go around. This is not always the case with footpath parking. And you are right, why shouldn’t the person in the wheelchair go around the truck so the truck driver doesn’t have to walk an extra ten metres to the shop. 🙂

Comic_and_Gamer_Nerd6:05 am 05 Oct 12

I don’t see the issue either. It’s not blocking the path at all from this angle.
I park up on grass areas if all parks are full.

Now now JB, he was merely referring to his own specific circumstances where such a warning may be prudent.

Luckily the rest of us needn’t worry about getting thumped while holding our cameras up to the windows of cars on Mt Ainslie late at night. It’s just not our thing.

So many threats and warnings of violence here.. Reminds me of a funny story.
At a footy match when someone was being obnoxious and someone else threw a beer. Then the first person got even louder and demanded to know who threw the beer, so much so that a third person stood up and said, ” I didn’t throw it but I’ll have ya anyway!”.
I just laugh and laugh at that one.

I thought those triangular spots were provided for cars like this. There used to be one of two of these Messerschmitts driving round in Canberra in the late 80’s but haven’t seen them since…

There is nothing illegal about reminding people to look out for their own safety.

I’m sure the ladies see nothing creepy in your “warnings” either

Such a Canberra thing to have a bitch over this. The car isnt blocking anyone in and the driver was probably ducking in and out of the shops, other cars weren’t obstructed, no potential loss of life as far as I can see. I really wonder how so many Canberrans survive travelling overseas where everthing isn’t as sterile and regulated.

Nice car-centric view. It would be different if you were in a wheelchair or had young kids who used the footpath and had to go around some lazy person’s vehicle. And spare us your Canberra-hating angst!

Mr G, always a good laugh. JB, the response king.

As for the parking, I don’t understand is why so many people run the gauntlet. Do people really not care about having to pay $80 (or whatever the fine is) for parking? Is it an ego thing?

If you’ve got that sort of money to just p*ss away, why not donate it to charity instead?

I’ve got a feeling that punter could be a multiple offender with that technique too. Pretty sure if seen another white HiLux displaying the same skillz in the past.

You drive a HiLux, you don’t need to park like that to prove you’re a d***head, we already know.

This is why 4×4 owners end up with a bad name…

Pfft as if a little gutter is going to stop me from displaying contempt!
