Parking on Marcus Clarke St

Is it just me or are the workers at 121 Marcus Clarke St the cheapest guys around?

The Black Falcon Ute has been parked on the road for about the last month with a note saying “Don’t book me. Here’s what happened last time.” Given he’s there at 8am in the morning and there’s still plenty of parking in both the Government Parking and City Wesk Parking, probably just goes to show the guys a tight-arse.

(Probably charges his mother a minimum 2hr call out fee & weekend rates when she needs someone to clean out the gutters.)

Given the parking inspects are can’t or don’t want to book them I suggest sticking a note on the front and back of the cars parked there saying “I’m too much of a tight-arse to pay for parking.”

Either that or lobby the Gov to put up No parkings but they seem to have already used the yearly quota on Cotter Road, Lady Denman Drive, Fairburn Ave, etc. They seem to the have forgotten that maybe putting one up where cars actually drive would be a good idea.

My guess is these guys are probably off some where with the guys that do the lawn mowing at the ovals and nature strips… possibly Stanhope’s local park?

Time to revive this post: the pavement upgrade at the corner of Marcus Clarke St and Alinga St has been completed, but as yet no-one has reinstalled the NO STOPPING signs. So if anyone wants a free car park in the City, you can park here. At least until someone from Roads ACT reads this.

I know the guy, my friend’s brother… I wrote the letter that got him off his first ticket. I’m not a lawyer; I just know the road rules.

Your comments about him charging his mother to clean her gutters, and him being a tight arse… hardly called for. He’s a good bloke. Your comment shows two things, people can be very brave with the anonymity of the internet. Secondly, people can have a tendency to make incredibly wild assumptions about another person, based on the appearance of, or their choice of car. Yet more proof that we live in a car oriented society, and have a disturbing “car culture”. But I’ve digressed.

His first ticket was issued for parking a vehicle “so as to obstruct vehicles/pedestrians”.

This charge was not warranted. He did not park on the foot path, did not block any foot path access ramps or driveways, he did park with his passenger side wheels within 30 cm of the curb, and parked leaving over 3 metres between his vehicle and the median strip for other vehicles to pass. A person can’t be charged with armed robbery when they’ve been illegally copying DVD’s!

He could however, be charged with parking too close to a passively controlled intersection (no parking within 10 metres) or parking too close to an intersection controlled by traffic lights (no parking within 20 metres)… unless he parked right in the middle of the two intersections, in which case it may be borderline… but I doubt it, I’d need a measuring tape. I have told him this.

That said, the no parking within XX metres of intersections rule, does not apply if there is signage governing otherwise. A couple of blocks away, the ACT Government allows parking within a metre or two of the intersection of Bunda and Mort streets. Why, is anybody’s guess, however if it is safe for people to park their vehicles that close to that intersection, why not others?

I appreciate that the point of your post is that you’re angry that he’s parking for free when you have to pay $6-$13 per day. However he’s parking there scot free as ACT Parking inspectors are apparently incompetent… and ACT Gov… a government who normally erects road signs at the drop of a hat… has apparently forgotten about this tiny corner of the world. Either two “no parking” or “no stopping” signs would be all that is needed to leave the construction workers who park here in absolutely no doubt, that they shouldn’t be… or the implementation of a temporary loading zone whilst 121 Marcus Clarke is built, will quash some anger. 🙂

Do they need to stick up a sign, no. Its a offence, the fact he got off the ticket it was due to a mistake in paper work. He is blocking a lane, forcing cars to block a lane as they turn left.

He might see more tickets on his car this week.

Buy an iPod and catch the bus???

Now that sounds like common sense?

All these people have to do is go to work at 4am, park there before he does and well now it’s there car park.

But then they wouldn’t have anything to rant about.

If he is working hard, then hey if he found a way to beat paying the parking fee then good on him. Many people used to park down near the Museum, until obviously the wrong person could not get a spot, so now there is room for what a 1/3 of the amount of cars that used to park there.

There are plenty of places in Campbell, Braddon and Reid where you can park for free, you may have to walk for 10 mins to get to work, but I’d rather walk 100mins a week then pay $69 a week for the pleasure of parking my car – that’s like a case of beer a week.

“I’m not a lawyer; I just know the road rules. ”
“This charge was not warranted”

The fact you used the word ‘charge’ in the 2nd sentencse shows how little you do know about road rules.

I’m guessing with this free press your friend’s genius effort at parking just went out the window

I, for one, would like to know what happened last time; did he put a note on his windscreen? Ooh! Scary! I wouldn’t be booking that bad boy! Imagine what would happen if everyone put notes on their windscreens!

what happened last time???

I don’t get it? Is this guy parked illegally? The note, as you have related it “Don’t book me. Here’s what happened last time.” appears slightly disjointed and confusing.

If the vehicle is parked illegally it should be pretty easy to bring it to the attention of someone, and if not (through loop hole or missing sign or whatever), then use the spot yourself and save on parking.

Quote – “Given the parking inspects are can’t or don’t want to book them I suggest sticking a note on the front and back of the cars parked there saying “I’m too much of a tight-arse to pay for parking.”

Well go ahead and do that, let us know how you go……….
