Parking Woden Style

woden parking

After a break for a few days the parking photographs have made a storming resurgence.

Cameron has sent this in:

I’ve finally decided to send in a photo of a Woden regular (car park southside of Aviation House).

I haven’t been keeping count, but if I said this vehicle had been booked 20 times this year it would be a conservative estimate.

No ticket today alas, but the owner of this vehicle dutifully places their prepaid parking ticket on the dash every time.

No sign of a disabled sticker (not that this would allow them to park in this ‘spot’ though).

Enjoy.

I”ve been working in Fyshwick for nearly 25 years, and one of the few advantages of working there is the free parking. I wonder how long it’s going to last.

Side not on Woden parking. As it has warmed up, all the people who are too soft in the middle of winter have dusted off their motorcycles and scooters. It is getting to the point where it is hard to get a spot in the free motorcycle parking bays. I didn’t have that problem the first week in July this year.

Which should make it easy for the parking police to issue a ticket.

Surely they must have a ‘system’ where they get out of the fine each time (e.g. car is in someone else’s name [an Ex!], they can claim it is somehow not illegally parked,…)?

Having worked at Health, the parking there is an absolute nightmare.

I’ve never had a problem. You’re lucky to get a spot in the pictured carpark after about 8.20am, but the massive carpark on Irving Street that runs from the pool down to the basketball stadium is pretty much empty, even at around 9.30am and is $8 a day.

Less than five minutes to walk to Aviation House and the Health Buildings, and you get a little bit more exercise too. It’s closer than the Westfield ‘Early Bird’ parking, and you don’t have to be in early to park there either.

While spaces are available around Discovery, Aviation and Sirius buildings until 9 ish, they become very few after that. On the rare occasions I have driven to work in the area, the car park east of the football grounds has been available before about 9.15am but not much after.

Those who are obliged to drop off children at schools or day care do not have much option of arriving early if the schools or day care centres will not admit children before say 8:15 or later.

One of my colleagues said that she needed two bus connections to reach Woden, a total of almost 90 minutes in the morning. Since she also had children at day care, the only practical way of getting to work was to drive a car which she did not particvularly care to do. She went home based as soon as she could, but still came in one or two days a week.

With the proposed development at the southern end of this car park, near the library, the parking situation will be dire indeed. It was claimed that there would be no net loss of parking spaces. This may be “true” but in the absence of supported claims to the contrary, such parking will be restricted to residents or workers in that building. My response to that claim was “Yeah, right”.

From the looks of where it is, i.e. at the end of a row, which is in turn at the top (or maybe the bottom) of the car park, where other cars drive past, it’s probably a no parking zone for safety reasons – so that people reaching the ends of these rows have a clear line of sight so they can see what’s coming their way.

I’d like to ask the question, why isn’t that a car space anyway? It seems to be wasted land if it isn’t used as one. From the markings, it looks like you are not meant to be driving over it either, so there must be plenty of room to drive around without needing it there. At the very least it could be a small spot or motorbike parking. I don’t think this guy is morally doing anything wrong since he doesn’t seem to be blockign anyone’s path and that could and probably should be a car space anyway and he is paying for the parking. Seems a bit unfair that he pays for parking and parks in a way that’s no hassle to anyone else and just constantly gets fines while, according to others in this thread, people blocking driveways get away without tickets frequently. It seems to me that he is trying to take the moral high ground by paying for parking and not just parking illegally and not paying.

If It was a legal parking spot then somebody else, who is currently opting to park legally elsewhere, would take it first. So I wouldn’t say there’s moral high ground to be claimed here.

If there was a car spot there, another person would be able to get that space. Perhaps someone else would have it and this person would have another. Either way, someone else can park there without being fined for it. When I say moral I mean right and wrong by other people, which I see as different in this case to the law. The question I ask to determine if something is moral or not is, “is it inconveniencing or harming anyone else?” since the answer is no, then I don’t see him parking there as immoral. Perhaps it is illegal but nobody is being harmed, and even the carpark owner is extra making money off him for it. So it’s fine by me. If he was in everyone’s way, that’d be another story.

Yeah, in the last two years of my employment at Health thats where i parked and it was an easy walk (better than the Phillip pool walk), although there was always dero’s walknig around the interchange when I was going home, so safetywise its a bit of a bummer.

More like 8:20am, but yes, parking is a pain if you work at Health…and the whole carpark is set to be developed, so it’s going to get worse.

$8 all day parking in the Westfield Neptune St car park. Never been full when I’ve shown up at 8:25. You will have to *shudder* walk an extra 300 metres to work.

That’s what I use when I work (irregularly) in Woden. You have to get there before a specific time, though (8:30 or 9:00, can’t remember which). Surely everyone in the area knows about this, but still I see people parked in the underground area below Woolies engaging in convoluted shenanigans (moving car in/out) to achieve basically the same result. Parking seems to be one of those things that some people just can’t manage rationally.

This car is illegally parked today in what looks a very similar position to the photo.

Too true, i worked with lots of people who lived in the surrounding suburbs who drove to work..

I, living in Gunners found it very hard to lug my daughter to childcare (@ Curtain) and then bus it to Woden… so driving was the only option.

Not enough people willing to take a bus which stops just near by.

How the hell do I pos t pics here? The main reason I call them hopeless is we don’t see them in Grenville court un less I shoot them an email. They rock up walk about and piss off not booking the cars half blocking the drive ways ect TNT have stopped backing in to our drive now to deliver parts most days it’s just too hard so they stop in the street and un load blocking traffic

It’s good, buying a parking ticket these days is optional, either way you’re not going to get booked.

Now that’s what i call initiative!

Why park illegally AND buy a ticket as well. Save the ticket money for the ticket… so to speak.
