Facebook has word on a program of parties planned at local shops around Canberra in March for the centenary:

On 12 March 2013, Parties at the Shops events will be held all over Canberra to celebrate the city’s 100th birthday. Come and party with your neighbours!
Description
We’re pretty sure that Canberra must be the only city in the world where you have to have road signs that point to the SHOPS, because otherwise you’d never find them, secluded as they are in our leafy avenues.

Canberra’s suburban shops are a unique part of the city’s landscape. Each has its own personality, local characters and resident community groups and artists. Canberra’s shops deserve to be celebrated.

Events will be held all over Canberra on Tuesday 12 March (and a few on other dates). All event dates will be listed on this page and on the Centenary of Canberra website: www.canberra100.com.au. You’re invited to wander down to any of the Parties at the Shops events and celebrate Canberra’s big hundred with your family and neighbours.

ARTISTS AND SHOP OWNERS
If you’d like to participate in Parties at the Shops, email amy@devilmoon.com.au.

Parties at the Shops is produced by Devil Moon and supported by the ACT Government as part of the Centenary of Canberra celebrations.

Enjoy!

Lucky Turner has no shops else we would party with Pocock!

Each shops has its own resident artists?

Unless they’re counting graffiti artists… no, no they don’t.

Having local shops in a centralised area with parking is great – much better than NSW where the shops are usually strung along a major road and there is no parking and you have to cross through the traffic multiple times. Plus constantly changing lanes when driving through as people park and pull out and all the rest.

Stop whinging. If you want to hang out at Belco Mall then you arent the hip cool person you think you are.

“Parties at the shops”? I thought this referred to political candidates at shopping centres during the election campaign.

Why? I can’t stand them normally. Do I have to like them for the centenary?

Scullin shops, March 13 – free sample-baggies of smack for everyone.

What a godawful idea. Someone gets paid to think up this dreck?

I try to avoid my local shops at the best of times, but this will give me even more reason to do so.

Is there nothing that these wacky Centenary people will not think of? Seems to be the case that if it happens in 2013 it is because of the centenary. Can we assume that in 2014 there will be no events whatsoever?
