Parton makes his move – Mike Jeffreys cops the bone

johnboy 25 April 2009 67

If Mark Parton had the good sense to advertise on this website there’s a fair chance he’d be in the Legislative Assembly right now surrounded by a staff of his mates.

Instead, as predicted here last November, he’s given the shove to Radio 2CC’s Mike Jeffreys and taken over the wierdly titled “Best of Breakfast” slot on the little listened to station found on the deprecated AM spectrum.

In a move reminiscent of Soviet Russia (something perhaps, should we have reason to refer to 2cc in future we might call them) there is now no mention of the former star on the website.

And yet Google still thinks he belongs there.

When you displease Canberra’s inner wheel, as Jeffreys did in the Spalding case, life can get very hard.

It a shame that the only reason I listed to 2CC no longer exists (exit MJ). I think 2CC should have a new slogan; I like to start it off with just two examples for your thoughts.

1. 2 Crappy Commentators (Mike Parton being No 1. Who is #2?)
2. Cheers 2 Crematorium Communications (a toast to a dead radio station)

If you have some tantalising (2CC) slogans please share them with us.

I didn’t think there would be enough people still driving around in Datsun 120Ys to support it.

I have an old magna. am is my only radio band.

Do you see us gasbagging about twitter?

I think not.

It’s a general mark of a moron to think twitter matters a tinker’s cuss.

Twitter, and other social networking medium similar to it, do matter, jb. They are a method of reaching other audiences outside standard communication channels. If twitter, and for that matter, facebook are such a waste of everyone’s time, why is it that large organisations are starting to use them to communicate their messages to a wider audience, engage in meaningful discussions about their products, terminologies and systems and provide additional avenues to make contact with new potential clients?

facebook is the same as twitter, however, even the RiotACT has a facebook page, with links to the new and interesting threads. Twitter is a scaled down version, allowing, for example, other forums to send out updates on new articles that may be of interest to members.

The professional version of these social networking sites is Linkedin. These sites have a purpose, whether it is re-establishing communication with old friends, creating new links to clients, or to ensure that the message that a group or company is trying to get out reaches a much wider audience. It is all part of the new direction that web 2.0 has allowed us to examine.

True, and I did again today. I do so hoping that he’ll liven up and stir some quality talkback. Today he was different. He actually addressed the criticism he’s received since he started, which was a surprise. I will re-iterate, that I’m commenting on his radio form only here, and not on him personally. He’s probably a really nice bloke, but perhaps too nice for talkback radio? Canberra being what it is, MP probably has his reputation as a nice guy to protect, and therefore won’t go hard on the pollies, or engage in a decent debate on current issues. I’ve heard plenty call him with an alternative view, and instead of engaging in a discussion, he just thanks them for the call and moves on. He doesn’t inspire me to ring him and discuss anything, as he’s more like a switchboard operator. I honestly hope he gets better, and gets more backbone into his show.

Oh god, no… please don’t. I can’t stand AFL and I have my own family, but thanks anyway.

“This, from someone posting on an online forum?”

Why yes I believe it is. Your point being? MP may be a fan of Facebook and Twitter, and good luck to him, but is there any need to hear it each day? His daily banter is chock full of such feel good, but pointless and ultimately empty fluff. He might be a top bloke. But perhaps morning talkback radio isn’t his thing? He could at least tell us what he really thinks about current issues, and engage in some robust discussion with callers and his interview subjects. Ms Gallagher escaped without a decent hard question being put to her this morning. It was a joke. At least the station owners and sponsors will adore him, as he won’t offend a single soul anytime soon. Come on Mark, open up and tell us what’s on your mind mate.

“His endless references to Facebook and Twitter are the sounds of someone who’s yet to grow up, and who yearns for social acceptance.”

Well, I’ve given Parton a fair go on CC, and I wont be tuning in anymore. The blokes a lightweight who’s too concerned with being nice and inoffensive. I wasn’t a huge fan of MJ either, but at least he said what he thought, and to those who disagreed, bad luck. MJ seemed to me, to love the sound of his own voice, and I think he loved Americans. He had a segment after the 6am news where he’d always talk to some American twat about plenty that concerned nobody. Apart from that I didn’t mind MJ. But Parton is painful. His endless references to Facebook and Twitter are the sounds of someone who’s yet to grow up, and who yearns for social acceptance. His interviews with pollies are as hard-hitting as a tissue, and his replaying of “Mark’s comedy gold” is quite sad. Thank goodness for the wonderful Jane Turner, who purrs her way through the news, and is a class act all the way. After Jane tells me how cold it is, it’s back to the Ipod. CC’s talking Canberra boast is under threat.

Who are these 2 dudes? What is a 2CC? WHo cares?

like this: Chatting to Greens Senator Christine Milne re ETS changes on 1206 2CC in Canberra. Then Bruce Buchanan GM Jetstar and Jenny Brockie Insight

no mention of his kids?

The main reason Parton didn’t get elected was because of his ‘native’ intelligence and indecisive demeanour.

What I found most troubling about his campaign is that he branded himself “The Voice of Reason”, but then was very cagey and vague about what exactly he stood for. It’s not good enough to say, “Hey – I’m a nice guy, with a nice family, and I’m concerned about Canberra, so please give me the balance of power, because you know I’ll do what’s right”. He may have thought he could be trusted with that responsibility without showing his cards, but evidently the electorate disagreed.

it really is a case of each to his own…

It certainly is Peter. I however like a bit of bit in my radio listening and find Parton not to my taste. He constantly sits on the fence and spends to much time talking about Aussie Rules and his family. I’m sure they are good people but there’s nothing people hate more than listening to someone talk about their own kids over and over. To me it’s the radio equivalent of being invited over to watch a slideshow of someone else’s holidays. As a past political aspirant I’d expect Parton to be more biting on key issues in the ACT but he comes across as wishy-washy on pretty much everything. Maybe with time he’ll develop a point of view and stick with it with some fervor, till then I’ll have to listen to ABC or my CD’s while driving to work.

ah, the joys of an am radio in an old car! I have known mark for several years, the discussion he had this morning with the brumbies and JennyBrockie from insight were worthwhile. I also get twitter updates from him, if it looks like the discussions are going to be interesting, I tune in. If not, back to 1053. Mark understands that there are times I won’t listen to him. That said, he aims for those who will. Focusing on those who won’t doesn’t help him do his job.
