The Department of Territory and Municipal Services have announced that their stormwater drainage program for Chapman requires closing parts of Cooleman Ridge:

The ACT Government wishes to advise Canberrans that part of Cooleman Ridge Nature Reserve will be temporarily closed from Monday 15 November 2010 to Thursday 23 December 2010 inclusive and again from Tuesday 4 January 2011 to Friday 25 February 2011 inclusive.

This is to allow construction works associated with the upgrade of the stormwater network in the suburb of Chapman.

This project will involve the first stage of upgrading the stormwater drain on Cooleman Ridge to ensure that it has sufficient capacity to protect Chapman from significant storm events.

These works will be undertaken in Cooleman Ridge starting from Pelham Place to Guinness Place .

The works will also see various earthworks; construction of stormwater pits and pipework; re-construction of the firetrail; construction of stone walls and retaining walls; fencing of environmentally sensitive areas and; landscaping works.

During construction, access to the site will be restricted for public safety reasons. During days of total fire ban no works will be undertaken. Some works may be required to be carried out during weekends to minimise disruptions.

As for disruptions to the public – I suspect that was never given a thought. Public using recreation areas during the week or on weekends? Let’s do the disruptive works on weekends! Total lack of insight into the use of the area.

Perhaps they meant disruptions to overtime and weekend bonus payments, given proximity of the work to Christmas!

“Some works may be required to be carried out during weekends to minimise disruptions.”

WTF do they mean by this?

What works would be less disruptive on a weekend as opposed to a week day – no roads or the like seem to be in very close proximity.
