canberra centre

A reader has sent in these pictures of an unusual party locale from yesterday:

I got a shot of some kids hanging out and sitting on the roof of the Canberra Centre at 4:50pm on 28/11/2011.

Silly kids!! They were there for at least 1/2 hr, walking on the roof and dancing (stupid!!) until security got to them.

party!

I was wondering if the recorded message was the result of an incident.

I remember the weekend before the “voice over” was installed, they had teens standing there asking people to hold onto the rail.

The Canberra Centre? The one that has the recorded voice telling you to stay between the lines on the escalators (at least I think that’s what I once deciphered)?

You can thank the pieces of sh*t who sue large shopping centres for that recording.

People sued them because they installed super slipery escalators and people were injured using them. Their insurers demanded the recorded messages because so many people (6 that we know of) slipped on them soon after the new section opened a few years ago. Of those six, three required ambulances and all were injured to a decent extent – broken wrist, cracked ankle, stitches required etc None of them were pieces of anything. Just people injured through no fault of their own….

I was wondering if the recorded message was the result of an incident. The rooftop partyers probably won’t be taken very seriously unless something happens and then the management will make a big show of doing something just to cover themselves legally.

It’s a funny world. It can be hard to find anyone to take concerns seriously before anything happens, the expression “failure of imagination” comes to mind. (The awkwardly slanting step in one of Canberra’s other shopping centres is of no interest to management.) But if something does happen then it’s panic stations. Can we anticipate the roof being covered in signs warning “heights can result in falls”? (Even though the responsibility ought to lie with the people who choose to go skylarking in areas where they shouldn’t be.)

The travelators should have been fixed properly, they are a publicly available facility and the public is entitled to certain expectations regarding their use. Or at the very least the recorded message should be loud enough and accurate…. “warning, hold on tight because we installed a bodgy surface to stand on and this recorded message is our cheap way of fixing the problem”.

Word on the street is that the escalators are to steep to begin with…

People need to take responsibility for their own actions. no sympathy from me.

I agree wholeheartedly. The Canberra Centre needed to take responsibility for their actions (slippery escalators). Or were you suggesting something else?

One is an accident, six (or more) is a result of not making safe something they knew was dangerous for their customers. Footware has nothing to do with it.

For the record – we didn’t sue. We asked them to make the escalators safer and to cover our out of pocket expenses. I do know that they were sued and rightly so.

were they wearing crocs or flat rubber soled trainers? Were they holding onto the handrail?

I too have slipped on those escalators when they are wet. Yes, they can be slippery.

The CC just installed lights on the side rails of the escalators this week.

eh, surprised security bothered. last time i reported a bunch of kids walking on the roof i got a “cool story bro” look, then they continued on their slow “patrol”

Have to say it’s probably more dangerous down on the ground than up there given some of the louts around the city. That said, all it needs is a good crack of lightening to the roof top, even a short distance from them and they could be injured. Not good.

On the contrary, double plus good. It’s all a matter of perception.

No harm done, looks fun. I bet that you could even do a running jump from one roof to the next.
