Jamberoo Action Park in Kiama is under fire after kicking 150 Canberra Telopea Park School students out of its water-themed venue after an apparent “risk assessment” mix-up on Thursday.

The Year 10 graduation excursion saw the teenagers make the seven-hour round trip to Jamberoo and enter the premises, only to be told to leave within their first hour.

“A group of students wasn’t allowed to go back and get their bags before being escorted out and the staff brought them down,” Year 10 captain Lachlan Li said.

“Some had shoes and pants left up there that they were never able to retrieve.”

Kathryn Andrewartha, whose 16-year-old daughter Belle was one of those evicted, said parents and students were confused and frustrated.

“We were told the students had to leave because [Jamberoo] had made an administrative error,” she said.

“Apparently, they turned the day into a primary students-only day, so their risk assessment didn’t allow for secondary students to mix with the younger children.

“I don’t understand how this could have happened, because the school booked this excursion three months ago.

“We understand mistakes can happen, but Jamberoo handled this very poorly.

“The excursion basically ended up as the kids just going to Maccas. It’s pathetic.”

The water park’s shutters were closed on students and teacher Mr Chen.

Region contacted Jamberoo and asked why the students were evicted and whether they’d receive refunds.

“We won’t be providing comment in response to the students’ concerns for the article,” general manager Matt George said.

The ACT Education Directorate said Telopea Park School had worked closely with Jamberoo Action Park over the past 24 hours to make arrangements for full reimbursement to all families and staff booked to attend on Thursday.

“Telopea Park School has sought to add some extra cheer to the Year 10 cohort’s celebrations on their last day today [Friday] by adding a sausage sizzle before the final concert, and providing frozen ice treats for the students,” a spokesperson said.

“The ACT Education Directorate is working with other schools who have bookings to visit Jamberoo this season to ensure arrangements are all in order.”

Lachlan called the experience a “nightmare”.

“The excursion cost us each $92,” he said. ”It was a long trip to get there. The staff weren’t apologetic at all. They even closed the shutters on us when we were waiting outside.”

Ms Andrewartha said she felt sorry for all the students and teachers, who had done a wonderful job organising the trip.

“The students had barely been on any excursions in their time in high school, as they’d been through COVID,” she said.

”This was their last chance to celebrate graduating Year 10 together. Next week, they’ll all be going their separate ways.

“As parents, we are extremely disappointed by Jamberoo’s treatment towards the kids. There was no empathy or acknowledgment of the fact this was their last excursion as a school group.

”The booking was made three months ago [or] our kids would not be on a seven-hour [return] bus trip to get there.”

This just frustrates and angers me, who im their right mind thought: “oh there’s an error here let’s just kick out a bunch of YEAR 10’S that are clearly graduating because we can, its not like they’ve not had many executions in their school life-” like that’s stupid. Mount stomlo is about to take their top pbl awardees to Jamberoo and I SWEAR… if they do the same im going to be SO PISSED.

How can they be denied their belongings?

Breach of contract agreement. They need to be liable for all costs that Telopea encountered- buses, relief staff, entry cost of Jamberoo. They accepted the booking made months prior, they took the money, they were heartless & kicked kids to the other side of the gate in their swimmers, 20 minutes after arriving and did not allow them to get belongings. The day was extremely disappointing and frustrating for all. Jamberoo were so unbelievably rude & unprofessional how they handled the situation. They had no care it was their last day of Year 10. Jamberoo know Telopea is a high school that arrives every year.
Why couldn’t they manage the ‘Primary only ‘ day once we had arrived. They could have got Primary teachers to phone their Principals and ask them to add one high school was on site & sign the updated risk assessment. They could have separated the advanced rides and primary suited rides and asked teachers and lifeguards to supervise appropriately.
Instead, they treated the students like criminals. These students had done nothing wrong, and had been up since 4.30am to get on a long bus ride in the 32 degree heat. It was disgraceful.
I will never visit Jamberoo ever ever again.

As one of the teachers for the primary schools, this article failed to mention that a few of these Canberra students vandalised the park in response to being asked to leave. I get that you all drove a long way to be there but vandalism is an immature way to respond and you should all learn to grow up.

Glad you are a primary school teacher and not a high school teacher. Teenager brains do not reach full maturity at 16, especially males. The frontal lobe changes twice, once as an infant and again around 16/17. Maybe you could do some research

Sparkling, so that gives them the right to vandalise things???

Newly released statement form Jamberoo does not state that this occurred at all. Yet another misinformed NSW teacher with foot in mouth disease.

That’s obviously not acceptable, but you’re stating it as if it was reason to kick there’s kids out – but then state that it happened in response to being asked to leave.

For the commenters claiming the Telopea Park kids were thrown out because of their behaviour, please read the text of the email from Jim Eddy, Managing Director, to the Principal, Michelle Morthorpe. Jim makes it very clear who was at fault.

Hi Michelle,

We are writing to sincerely apologise for the upset, distress and inconvenience that we have caused as a consequence of Telopea Park School’s visit to Jamberoo. We have all been seriously affected by this mistake that we have made. We would like to assure you that we will do everything possible to rectify our mistake.

We will issue a full refund to Telopea Park School including transport costs. We are in the process of emailing the school with two complimentary tickets per student to return to Jamberoo Action Park between now and the end of our 2024/2025 Season which is Sunday 27th April 2025.

We wish you a Happy Christmas and a safe holiday.

Kind regards,

Jim Eddy | Managing Director | Jamberoo Action Park

I wonder if Jamberoo will introduce staff training?

I wonder if the parents can parent their children into showing respect

My good mate Fabian Harding’s son Evan was there and he was not allowed to re-enter to get his shirt. Evan also said that his friend Carter couldn’t go back to get his shoes and the staff couldn’t find them so he made the 4+ hour journey home in socked feet. The staff and admin at Wet’n’Wild are far superior, no discussion required.

Other than to point out it changed hands and name from Wet and Wild some time ago?

Sorry for the lack of clarity—I was referring to the water park in the Gold Coast which is near where I used to reside. I’m sure Raging Waters (I think this is the one you meant) would not struggle to top the standards set at Jamberoo.

More information required before I can make a judgement.

If the park has screwed up, allowed the kids to travel 3 hours there, then kicked them out in that manner, I’d be engaging a lawyer if I were one of the parents. A refund simply isn’t good enough under those circumstances.

Why? What would you expect to achieve? It appears to have been a stuff up (probably different park staff not telling each other important info). What harm has anyone suffered apart from wasting some time and some disappointment?

BRIAN ASHCROFT11:41 am 07 Dec 24

I understand the reasoning-it’s the same reason we did not allow adults and juniors to train on adjoining sportsgrounds-but because the mistake was made by Jamberoo-they should have let them stay.
