pay parking

The Auditor-General has announced her performance audit into the ACT’s pay parking operations:

The ACT Government’s effectiveness, and especially efficiency, in the management and administration of its parking operations is restricted because of shortcomings in:

• supporting governance and administration arrangements;

• planning and maintenance of parking assets; and

• management of parking fee increases and infringements.

Some shortcomings can be addressed through initiatives that are currently underway, for example the full implementation of the 2012 Transport for Canberra Plan.

UPDATE: The Liberals Alistair Coe is going to town on this:

“The report demonstrates that the Government does not consider parking as an important issue for Canberrans.

“Rather than treating the provision of parking as a core business of a local Government, the ACT Government simply sees parking as a way to gouge Canberrans.

“The ACT Government needs to offer a better service for Canberrans who pay up to $135 in coins per fortnight to park,” concluded Mr Coe.

That’s probably the most accurate thing Coe has ever said.

+1.

thats the problem with the ACT government at times. They don’t actually fix the problem, they just finds ways to force you to use a something you don’t want to. I dare say the reason we’ve had coin only carparks is to get people onto substandard public transport. To be honest i don’t think that anything other than intercity public transport will ever be proftiable anyway yet they persist on leaving coin car parks, average bus services unless you happen to live on the main bus routes.

Even easier would be an e-tag system…drive in, drive out, account charged. Simple!

Why not introduce something like Action’s ‘MyWay’ system, for ACT government carparks? It would be a huge help for people who work part-time or between several locations and therefore find purchasing a long-term parking permit uneconomical.

Spot on.

One of the worst things is the coins thing. I worked at Woden for a few months before finding somewhere smarter to work, and the daily concern of ensuring I had $8 or $10 in coins for the machines was bloody annoying. They’ve had machines that take cards for years now, but not in ACT Government parking areas. Pre-buying a weekly pass was an epic pain in the arse, you might not be using pay parking for the whole week, if you were in Civic you had to buy on the ‘net two weeks ahead, and if in Woden you had to take a ticket and wait at the shopfront. Just to park!
