Pen poor but making billions.

I saw today that Westpac made the news again with another multi billion dollar profit. This news doesn’t surprise me in the least. I can see the bank goes to extraordinary lengths to save on costs.

Take for instance today.

I walked in during my lunch to deposit a cheque at the Tuggeranong branch. The ATM outside the bank wasn’t accepting deposits. Damn, I had to go into the bank and it looked a long wait as the queue was nearly out the door. I found the fast deposit chute, grabbed an envelope and went to one of the desks to fill it in. That’s when I realised there were no pens and no deposit slips, none anywhere. That’s strange I thought, the deposit envelope specifically directs me to fill in a deposit slip and insert it with the cheque into the envelope.

Anyway, I couldn’t see any staff member around to get a pen or a deposit slip so rather than wait an eternity in line and being in a hurry I raced down to the Post Office, borrowed their pen and their desk, wrote my account details on the back of the cheque, raced back to the bank and placed the sealed envelope in the chute. Mission accomplished! Cheque deposited.

It must be the way customer service is heading.

It must be the way to make a few billion dollars profit too. Perhaps they can make up for a lack of customer service by making a sizable donation to a charity. An eye for an eye I say. How about Telstra Child Flight? Telstra Child Flight services Canberra quite regularly by retrieving newborn children and other kids requiring urgent medical treatment. The kids are flown interstate where there are doctors and nurses that can treat them.

Do you think perhaps they should donate to the westpac rescue choppers? http://bit.ly/SPTeKT

And that children, is how jaff067 was banished to the land of ” think before you rant”.

I must admit I was somewhat disappointed as I prepared to deliver the same death blow, but enjoyed it nonetheless. Well played good sir.

Wow.

People still use cheques?

Get sent heaps of them e.g. cheques get sent to me to forward onto a doctor, presumably so I can check the doctor is not making outlandish claims, and I also get the odd cheque if I win a prize in lotto (I’d prefer to get more of them but never am lucky enough!).

I opt for Telstra Child Flight. They’ve made several hundred retrievals from the ACT. I know of 4 of them in particular.

Im no fan of Bank’s service but I save my angst for actual problems not one time minor inconveniences. Cheques? Use a 1950s product expect a 1950s service

It wasn’t my choice to use a cheque. I don’t use them however if an organisation wants to send me a cheque as payment I’ll accept it, especially when I know for certain that it won’t bounce. As for it being a one time inconvenience, it is how the banks now operate. By getting rid of pens and paper (i.e. deposit slips) businesses and the odd personal customer depositing a cheque such as myself are all forced to use ATMs. Though looks like the ATMs can’t handle the volume now being thrust at them and the brains in the bank failed to foresee any need to change the wording on the deposit envelopes used at the quick deposit chute.

That would include pens, though.

Combank seem to have extraordinary customer service recently.
