A woman has been killed in a two-vehicle collision earlier this morning on the Barton Highway north of Murrumbateman.
Emergency services were called to the highway near Gounyan Road, Yass, at about 6:10 am on Thursday (13 October).
The 38-year-old female driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene.
The 31-year-old male driver of the other vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, was trapped before being freed by Fire and Rescue NSW crews.
He’s been flown to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
An investigation into how the crash occurred was now underway.
Diversions are in place, with the highway expected to be closed in both directions for some time.
For light vehicles, northbound motorists from Canberra could divert via Murrumbateman Road, Sutton Road and Gundaroo Road to the Hume Highway at Gunning, before rejoining the Barton Highway at Yass.
Southbound drivers from Yass could use the Hume Highway to Gunning, before heading onto Gundaroo Road, Sutton Road and Murrumbateman Road to rejoin the Barton Highway at Murrumbateman.
This diversion is suitable for light vehicles only. Heavy vehicles were encouraged to take the Federal Highway and Hume Highway, otherwise they were being parked on the side of the road.
All motorists have been told to allow an additional 45 minutes travel time.
