The ABC brings sad news from the coronial inquest into the strangling murder of Susan Winburn of Gordon on 13 January 2004 after, it is believed, she interrupted burglars.

Her body was then put into a bath, possible to destroy DNA evidence on her body.

Chief Coroner Ron Cahill says the evidence to date would not secure a conviction and has called on the public (that would be you) to come forward if they have more information.

What we can do is name the following people as being “of interest” in this murder:

Leanne Madden, Neil Kelly, Ian Kelly and Joel Ross.

I cna’t believe this Maddern woman clearly knows what happened and won’t say.

This is yet another problem with very light sentences. If the penalty for burglary was a gaol sentence, they could have made a deal with her, to say what happened, for a light sentence.

But when the sentence was just a good behaviour bond – that leaves her with no incentive at all to tell what she knows.

How infuriating for the family of the victim, to know that the police know these people were in the house on the day Susan died, but that they can’t actually charge them.

Torture throws up false positives.

Sodium Pentathal on the other hand is pretty good at getting to the truth of the matter.

Indeed. Not only will the person say anything that they believe will get the torture to stop, often they will come to actually believe this falsehood.

What exactly is the point of naming ‘persons of interest’?
Are they under arrest, wanting to arrest them or just warning us all to steer clear of these unsavoury types?

Oh how the Boys in Blue must wish that fingernails, pliers, and electricity hadn’t been ruled out.

Fair chance it would accelerate the clear up rate.

“I may have gone to school with one of the accused. If not, the bloke who shares his name was also destined for a life living on the edge of the law…”

GF, me too, me too! and I sorry to say but I’m not surprised either!
He was an advanced bogan even in primary school.

Look out – Underbelly 3 comes to Canberra.

I may have gone to school with one of the accused. If not, the bloke who shares his name was also destined for a life living on the edge of the law…

between the massey’s and the kelly’s canberra sure does have some problem families – hopefully the system can do something to prevent more deaths

I guess real life isn’t like an episode of law and order, where you know half way in who committed the murder.

oh wait….

You’re not normally a hang’em high type WMC?

From the Crimes:

“Madden was given a suspended 12-month jail sentence, and put on a two-year $2000 good-behaviour bond in August 2004 for breaking into Ms Winburn’s home early on the day of the killing and then returning later with two others to break in again.”

I can think of plenty of people I’d kill for a suspended sentence and a couple of grand.

“Oh, I totally broke in, but I didn’t kill them.”
“Well, that’s all right then. Look, don’t break in anywhere else for the next couple of years and we’ll let you have your money back. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
