ANU Vice Chancellor Young has announced that Dr Peter Tregear is going to take over as head of the troubled School of Music.

Dr Tregear has extensive international experience as a researcher, teacher, and academic administrator in music education, both in the UK and Australia. He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne, and King’s College, Cambridge, and has held positions at the universities of Queensland, Melbourne, Cambridge and most recently at Monash University.

At Monash Dr Tregear is presently Executive Director of the Academy of Performing Arts, in charge of the highly successful academic and public outreach performance programs for the School of Music and Centre for Theatre and Performance, and for managing the large-scale performance venues.

He’s got his own website too.

Hang on a sec – they want to treat this place as a business, so they go and give the job to a bloke who has not once in his life been gainfully employed outside of an Ivory Tower?

Despite all the ‘touchy feely’ stuff that’s coming out of the Chancelry and the College of Arts, I really wouldn’t be at all surprised if they want the School of Music to disappear altogether – and putting another suitably chosen ‘ivory tower’ academic into the position of Head would probably be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Next up to the chopping block: John Curtin School of Medical Research?

JB, that should read “ANU Vice Chancellor Young”.

By the way, did anyone see this position advertised anywhere? I don’t recall hearing anything about it being advertised, so I’m wondering if it’s just been a perfect job for someone’s mate?
