Petrol & LPG prices in Canberra

Interesting to note on the Shell website of national and ACT Petrol prices that the 28 day average price of unleaded petrol in Canberra is still 8 cents a litre more than Sydney ($1.27 vs $1.19).

But what’s more interesting is LPG prices in Canberra. I’m considering changing over to the cheaper fuel for my six cylinder car, but wonder how long it will take the oil companies to start profiteering from LPG.

Why, for example, according to the same Shell website, is LPG 57.9 cents a litre in Tuggeranong, and 49.9 cents in Belconnen. (At least you could argue transporting costs with the petrol pricing difference with Sydney).

While I’m at it, can anyone recommend a local LPG installer, and an indea of the price?

I have just bought a vehicle that runs on LPG and would appreciate any tips from regular LPG users re best service stations to checkout Northside or central. Where do taxis head for when they need a fill ?
Taking a run up into NSW I was surprised to find Yass main street (64.5) a couple of cents dearer than the Caltex at Gold Creek – the big servo on the Hume west of Yass was a few cents dearer 68 I think – Temora was mid to high 70’s and West Wyalong mid 80’s – so the lesson is fill up in Canberra. Over a few years I have found Yass and Goulburn generally cheaper than Canberra for ULP – maybe LPG follows a different track.

Batemans Bay was 116.9 yesterday.

Calwell had it this morning at 119.9.

the stanley steamer uses 53 litrres of fuel to get from here to albury, and it was 1.32 a litre.

any servo on the hume highway is the only place fuel is dearer than canberra.

Cooma, of all places, is hovering around 119. I’m not complaining down here, but come on…

I noticed prices down at BB this weekend were about 10c – 15c cheaper than when I left Canberra.

Interestingly too, in the last couple of weeks I’ve seen prices slightly cheaper than Canberra in both Batemans Bay and Yass. About a month ago, Marulan was 3 or 4 cents cheaper than Canberra, which I thought was pretty good and filled up, only to find it around 10 cents cheaper than here around Camden and also in the Blue mountains.

Hard to believe there’s not some artificial behaviour driving the market here in Canberra!

Last weekend I was driving back from Sydney and the really odd thing is that it’s not just the Sydney petrol. Even the random little road houses along the way seem to be significantly cheaper than those here in Canberra.

Ah well, I’m just glad I have a small car which I don’t use much.
