Phenomenon 2008 is a gaming convention held in Canberra at Daramalan College over the June 2008 long weekend.

Pheno provides role-playing, RPGA , Living Arcarnis and miniatures games (Warhammer 40K, Flames of War, etc) as well as special events such as the Tryptich, Mission Improv, the World Wide 4th Ed D&D games day on the Saturday and a banquet on the Sunday night. There are also a number of vendors who’ll be selling gaming supplies and books.

The Pheno website has details of our special events, role-playing and miniatures games. Chariman Morph invites you to come and have a look around, choose the games you want to play and join the Phenomenon collective for the fun! 🙂 Registration is from 6pm this evening and we’d love to see you there!

The C64 had a really good helicopter game where you were infiltrating a subterranean complex, kind of like choplifter but freakier.

C64 and arcade games can be easily emulated on the PC, plus you can get a joystick that plugs straight into your telly loaded with over 20 C64 games (and a mountain of easter eggs) ,it’s called C64 DTV.

Maybe retro console/computer/arcade gaming will be at the next Phenomenon, which is a celebration of the other glory that is tabletop gaming (miniature wargames, RPGs, card games)… other cons have expanded to include computer games (mainly FPSs, not my cup of tea)

Lol. man everytime you mention these names i remember them! choplifter was cool, so was that moon game where you drove along jumping what looked like palm trees in craters. hells yeah.

Karateka? One of my faves. My friends had Apples, but I had a C64 – they all wanted to play Barbarian, Wizball, IK+ etc – all I wanted to do was play Karateka, Wolfenstein, Lode Runner, Choplifter and Aztec.

I think the first game i played was called karatica or something like that. I think it was the pre cursor to Prince of Persia (which was awesome!!). What an awesome game it was.

Galaxian (well, Galaga) was the first arcade game I ever played – 83, I think. Friend at school said he was having a birthday party. When we arrived, his dad piled us all into his van, took us to the fish and chip shop, ordered $20 worth of fish and chips, then gave us another $20 worth of 20c coins to play Galaga. Best. Party. Ever.

Galaxians (and asteroids) was about all our Compucolour could manage. Bet no one remembers those! (pre-dated the Apple II).

Elite, Elite 2, Cannon Fodder, Chaos Engine, Micro Machines, It Came From The Desert, Syndicate – They were all so rad. Ah man im going have to get my amiga back up and running!

Ahh Jools and Jops. The memories…

Ant @#38 Oooh! He’s not GAY! He’s CATHOLIC!

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course…. (but the Blood Giant would still kick his @rse).

He’s not gay, but his boyfriend is.

Ant @#38 Oooh! He’s not GAY! He’s CATHOLIC!

@ Snarky and his gay St Isidore… The Blood Giant is WAAAY tougher than that character, and he’s too tough for paint, too. And if he had a mouse (and a computer) it’d be a bluetooth one, so there.

WMC: Did you ever play silkworm on amiga? Pinnacle of gaming, i swear it.

Yeah, loved it in the arcade too. There was a bowling alley near our place that had Silkworm, Shinobi, Double Dragon and Black Tiger next to each other – needless to say we didn’t do much bowling. Easy enough to fire up on MAME, but not the same as using a rickety old joystick on your Commodore monitor, waiting for the floppy to finish grinding…

Just had a look to see if I could find the original Silkworm box for a quick pic but could only find a backup – must be in one of the other 70 litre plastic tubs full of Amiga stuff. Found boxes for just about everything else though – Elite, Elite 2, Cannon Fodder, Chaos Engine, Micro Machines, It Came From The Desert, Syndicate…might have to go fire up Moonstone :>

Ant @#25 He’s looking for a fight too…

Hah! Pathetic – now here’e a REAL Statue of Power, St. Isidore, Patron Saint of teh Internets, as beatified by Himself and the BVM, via the Pope. Also handpainted.

And I’m a nerd and proud.

Deadmandrinking4:48 pm 08 Jun 08

Note VG, I’m 6″4, 90kg’s, not Tap.

Heh. vg desperately clearing egg out of his eyes, poking people on stools wanting a fight.

I’ve never read Lord of the Rings, was not (and still aren’t) quite sure what Warhammer is, played Galaxions on our first computer (but preferred the bazooka game) and bought The Blood Giant becuase I was dragged into this shop, and he’s a taking little fellow. Unlike vg, who as tap said, is a parody of himself.

Strange.I thought we were having a nerd off. You know all those comments about who was a bigger nerd? And which nerd hobby was best? Just before your sherlock holmes style deduction skills lead you to the genious conclusion that we are nerds? Back there. Oh did you mean we should go and fight? Sorry man, nerds we are, but so lame that we would resort to threats of violence of the internet? That we are not.

You know what else is a stereotypically nerdish behaviour? Spending time on internet forums. Take a look at yourself.

Keep trying.

But then again you are around 6’4″ and 90kgs and can ‘handle yourself’. Is that in the real or virtual world though?

In fact from what I read here you do a lot of ‘handling yourself’. Perhaps yourself, DMD and ant could have a ‘nerd off’?

I swear sometimes you are a parody of yourself vg.

If living in reality is foolishness then yes I am.

FYI, Lord of the Rings was a work of fiction.

Blood Giant………..oh my hat!

WMC: Did you ever play silkworm on amiga? Pinnacle of gaming, i swear it.

@vg: Oh dear, you are quite a fool, aren’t you?!

“As you can see, vg, I know all about gaming”

This comes as no surprise to me. You fit the stereotype perfectly

Here’s The Blood Giant:

He’s looking for a fight too…

(the things you do on a boring Sunday…)

As you can see, vg, I know all about gaming…. Still wandering around the bar room, trying to find someone to fight you?

Woody Mann-Caruso3:25 pm 08 Jun 08

Carders killed gaming. OK, to be fair, Vampire mortally wounded gaming (ooh, look at me, I don’t game for fun, I’m so full of tortured angst and I pretend I’m The Crow when nobody is looking), and MtG finished it off.

Real nerds roll dice, cast Magic Missile at the darkness and drink Mountain Dew. Wanna play D&D? Couple pieces of paper, a bag of dice, beer and chips, off you go. You MtG freaks, with your endless shuffling and tapping – you’re like meth addicts.

Now, I’m off to play IK+ on one of my Amigas.

What a surprise to see Tap, DMD and Ant on a gaming thread. Maybe they forgot to wear their cloaks of invisibility

Deadmandrinking2:10 pm 08 Jun 08

I’m Kano. Watch your step mofo!

DMD: And what, pray tell, is your experience in this field? This should be good.

You better be a magic card, or else any reasons or thoughts are null and void.

Yeah I had a mountain bike too. And an amiga 500! so bow down to my superior nerdness, fool!

Deadmandrinking1:55 pm 08 Jun 08

Yeah, we used to get the God ones.

Deadmandrinking said :

I used to get paid $5 a wheelbarrow-load of kindling (couldn’t really do pamphlet deliveries in the sticks)…

… so you just collected them instead.

Deadmandrinking1:38 pm 08 Jun 08

And it also meant I got a mad-ass mountain bike and sega master system games for Christmas/birthdays.

Deadmandrinking1:37 pm 08 Jun 08

Tap, because you disagree with me, you are therefore completely wrong and inexperienced with life and I am so much smarter than you.

Flap flap flap – that means you are a fish out of water. See, I am smart enough to use the sound effects. Flap flap flap. Get it?

You should check out Goatse.cx. Only I doth know the secrets that lie within TEH INTERNETS!!

Seriously, I did a pamphlet delivery and before that I used to get paid $5 a wheelbarrow-load of kindling (couldn’t really do pamphlet deliveries in the sticks). I just didn’t want to waste my money on stupid little army men. I did try once, but when I thought about how much it would be to make a full army vs. how much it was to buy and trade a super kickass magic deck, I chose the latter. More coca-cola and chips from the shops for me!

ant: Yeah that sounds like it. ahh the grand plans of painting models. that takes me back 🙂

Is Warhammer that thing based in England, with mediaeval/lord of the rings type figurines made of pewter? We visited a shop in York in 88 and I acquired a very handsome fellow called The Blood Giant. I didn’t paint him though. He’s still around here somewhere. A friend bought all kinds of things, including a model of a castle turret. I believe he had plans to paint all of it.

el: yeah i think its wrong type of gaming… that makes no sense to me, but is pretty cool.

DMD: I have a differing opinion, so I spose I should begin this with a tirade about how stupid you are for thinking something different to me.

Warhammer was awesome! It was great fun. Painting the minituares, creating scenery, reading about the story behind it. Granted i barely ever actually played games, but it was cool! And don’t try and pull this ‘im so poor you rich bastards with 40K are lame. When I was a kid, we lived in a lake.’ crap, you are as middle class as anyone else here, you got birthday and christmas presents too. If you needed more money you should have had a pamphlet delivery route like I did, and become a good little captitalist getting paid exploitatively low wages to save up for something you didn’t need but did want!

End nerd rant.

Deadmandrinking12:02 pm 08 Jun 08

lol, Maelinar bringing up a really old internet thing, typical.

Are there any Warhammer freaks on here. If so, let me tell you you’re all SUCKERS! Paying $100’s and $100’s of dollars on stupid little army men to get your nerd fix.

Me, I got my proper, economical nerd fix from certain cards that you will laugh at me if I mention. Just a couple of bucks for a booster pack, $15 for full deck….best nerdiness my little money could buy! Then I sold my collection which, acording to my twelve year old self, was worth hundreds, for twenty bucks when I was fifteen so I could buy…stuff *whistle*

End nerd rant.

Wrong type of gaming?
