Philippines President in Canberra

Thumper 30 May 2007 13

The Blayney Chronicle is reporting that Philippines President Gloria Arroyo arrives in Canberra today for talks on on security and counter-terrorism. She will meet up with Mssrs Howard and Rudd with the PM expected to sign a treaty between Australian and the troubled Philippines to allow Australian troops to train there.

Apparently Australia is also donating some 28 riverboats, as used in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, to the Philippinos so they can shoot, I mean, patrol, their rivers for bad guys.

Does treaty and donating gunboats sound suspiciously like Australia gaining a strategic military foothold in the Philippines? How long before we have ‘advisors’ on the ground such as in 1962 with the AATTV in Vietnam?

How many rent a crowd protesters will turn up to the airport?

I’m not saying that the Philippines will be another Vietnam but it wouldn’t surprise me if we ended up with troops on the ground helping to fight the ‘insurgency’.

OK. I’d like to take credit for all the articles that sparked 50+ response flame-wars between:

– Cyclists and proper road users (read: cars).

– Drag racing fans and NIMBYs opposed to the strip on the grounds of noise

– NIMBYs (generally inner north residents) and supporters of anything else enjoyable on the grounds of noise, or ‘interrupting quality of life’.

Global warming fear-mongers and people with common sense.

The anti-police brigade and law-enforcement officials.

Anti-smoking zealots and intelligent people.

Deb Foskey apologists and everyone else.

And also any mention of recumbant cyclists.

I’d like to give EL credit for all the nuisance posts I’m lodging tonight.

Jiminy creepers, it’s good to be back in sunny Canberra at the right time of year.

Well, we can give you the credit for all that Crazy Chester stuff if you want…

In saying that, I wish that I got credit for stories that I had no part in writing or submitting.

Nothing much. We just thought you might be Gloria Arroyo!

Besides, didn’t you go to the Philippines?

Drawing a longbow there JB. I am sure the Philippines will not become our next ‘Vietnam’.

Australia’s aid program to the Philippines is nearly A$90 million (our 5th biggest I think).

It includes strengthening economic governance, promoting security and stability, vocational education and training, agrarian reform and rural development, health and education NOT just military support.

I am attended a luncheon in honour of the President at PH tomorrow…I’ll let you know what is on the menu 🙂
