The National Excellence in Teaching Awards have been announced for 2009 and Phillip Hall from Yarralumla Primary School is carrying the flag for the ACT.

This from the media release:

Phillip recognises the special needs of students with autism and has developed systems to ensure that his students can achieve their very best. Using techniques such as Individualised Sensory Diets for each student, Phillip helps to reduce the anxiety and sensory issues faced by children with autism.

Congratulations to Phillip. And by way of warning, be careful with that glass apple trophy. A previous winner of my acquaintance burned a hole in his suit while posing for photographs in sunlight with it.

Wonderful! I’m kind of jealous of the incendiary apple ….

Congrats to Phillip for doing such a wonderful job. And I don’t think teaching is thankless Ant – I know of many teachers who love what they do and recieve plenty of thanks from grateful parents and students. I just wish teachers earned a shed-load more money, because for the most part, they deserve it.

Male primary school teachers are an endangered species these days, may this gentleman have a long and inspirational career. You have got to respect someone who does such a thankless job. At least he has an incendiary apple now.

Nice to see some recognition for teachers who are so committed to their work.
