Photos of Scrivener Dam

Here are two photos I took (one last night & one this morning) of Scrivener Dam. At present 3 of the sluices are open and allowing flow into the Molonglo River. Word from a friend, who works for SunWater in Brisbane – the company responsible for managing & maintaining Scrivener Dam – is that the people are working around the clock monitoring the water levels in the lake and it seems that extra people will be sent down from the Brisbane office to help out. Still no word on if and when the floodgates may be opened. More photos are up on my blog.

Thats why its great to see the Snowy in flood even though its sad that some houses were lost in Eastern Victoria its good news for those Rivers to get a good flush.

the ecosystem has evolved to have droughts AND floods. As we’ve diverted water into dams and irrigation, floods happen less and less. A great illustration of a river suffering from no floods is the Murray. Rivers need floods.

All this water that’s being released, is that overflow or just because? Should some of this water be redirected into our main dam storages? I always get dissapointed to see all that storm water wasted when we need it.

Its supposed to be white but 15 second exposures at f3.5 with a theatre gel of my chosing colour and a sun gun (3million cp torch) renders it the colour of my choice.

ant i have seen that gate from the bottom and for you to sit there in a rowing device is crazy .. i admire you

So what colour *is* that dam(n) guardrail, Danman?

wow great photos guys it would be good to see one of the walls open though !

On our early morning rowing training, if the floats were open we’d row right up to the metal wall of that dam, and be right up against it, with our blades sticking out into midair! Very scary (it wasn’t my idea).

The Molonglo is right up, it’s been over the road crossing at Oaks estate for a few days now. I can’t even remember when that road was last closed.

One set of close quotes per tag missing and the world goes boom…

What exactly are the extra people from Brisbane going to help out with? Surely this isn’t a case of manually turning big wheels to slowly open a flood gate.

Not a dig, actually curious.

My uncle told me that it used to be possible to get a look inside the dam if you asked the Dept. Of Territories but OH&S laws applying to confined spaces put an end to that long ago.
