A free season of Shakespeare’s otherworldly romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream is coming to Canberrans next month, but if you’re prepared to pay for a little more love and want to avoid the hoi polloi then Shakespeare by the Vines is for you.

Shakespeare by the Vines at Pialligo Estate on 27 and 28 February offers a dinner and theatre event like no other in Canberra, says Lakespeare & Co, which already has six free dates locked in at four outdoor venues.

For the price of your ticket, enjoy a world of wine, food, fairies and fun, set in the stunning Glasshouse space at Pialligo Estate with sunset views of the olive grove, and nearby vines and orchards.

“Just minutes away from the city’s centre, join us for a glass or two of crisp Canberra wine, a plate or four of amazing local produce, take in the venue’s high glass walls, lush gardens, glorious natural light and immerse yourself in a bespoke, bold and vibrant performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” organisers say.

“In 2018 Lakespeare gave you one story: the goings-on in Leonato’s household in Much Ado About Nothing. In 2019 we gave you two stories: separated twins crashing into Illyria’s madness in Twelfth Night.

“And in 2020 we have chosen the comedy of Shakespeare which gives you three stories: the trials of four young lovers trapped in a forest, the tension between Fairy Queens Oberon and Titania and the ordeal of a group of wanna-be artisans (the mechanicals) attempting to stage an ancient play. Feuding families, parental control and magical madness mix together in Lakespeare’s third summer season.”

Lakespeare says support for this unique event will help the theatre company continue to bring quality, accessible theatre to Canberra’s summer parks in future years.
