Pie Day Friday for East Africa famine

Canberra’s answer to Bono, ABC Content Maker Jo Laverty is organising a fundraising drive for the East Africa famine tomorrow and if I’ve learned anything it’s to do what beautiful and powerful women tell me to.

666’s Pie Day Friday! This Friday, August 19.

It’s an easy, delicious way to fundraise for the people who desperately need our help.

Why pies? Because EVERYONE likes pies! Meat pies, lemon meringue pies, cottage pies, apple pies… The list just doesn’t end!

It doesn’t matter if you work in a big office, or you have just one next door neighbour you could invite over for pie. No matter how big your pie-eating circle of friends, you can participate.

Invite everyone to an easy location to eat pie, be it your dining room table, your office kitchen, or your playgroup rug.

Everyone should bring a pie, a donation to the cause and their global community spirit.

Get together to eat the pies, collect the donations and show you care.

When you’ve collected your money donate here.

All joking aside the situation is terrible and possibly the most monstrous thing is just how little money it takes to save a life.

How can eating food in order to raise money be “tasteful” for the purpose of feeding starving families?? I recall a thing called the 40 hour famine which I did as a kid. It raised money and made you understand something of what it is like to not have food. The only image I get from this promotion is a bunch of well fed women, devouring 3 times their daily dietary intake whilst throwing their spare change into a tin can and thinking they are doing something charitable.

If you ask the parents of the starving children whether they would prefer you ate a pie for dinner at home tonight, without a fundraiser, or ate that same pie at work and raised enough to save and feed their child, what do you think their answer would be? It’s not as though your alternative is going to be doing without food yourself.

That’s what I thought, but I didn’t like to say.

Our atheist Prime Minister is just as grovelling with the christian lobby as the former Coalition Government was, so not likely.

It has. One of th first things that he (Rudd) did from memory.

Call me a hard-nosed b*tch but perhaps if the world sent these poor buggers some contraceptives instead of (or even as well as) food and money, there might not be such a tragedy unfolding?

Would you really stand back and watch kids die because of the mismanagement of resources? Imagine you were one of the women walking for days, dodging violent gangs, watching your kids starve, because idiots have spent so much on war. Look at a densely populated country like Japan, where no one is currently starving, despite its terrible natural disasters. (And compare with during WWII, where the priorities were, um, rather different.) It’s not just the number of people, it’s how the country is run.
We are so luck we should share that round a bit.

The word I would use to describe you would not get past moderation on this site.

Actually, I wouldn’t call you the word I initially thought of. You have neither the warmth nor the depth.

Maybe it was expressed badly, but I don’t really see the problem with pointing out the issue of overpopulation. Even with all of its famines and disease, Africa’s population is growing at an extraordinary rate. Liberals have a go at the Catholic church about it all the time.

Does anyone else find the idea of stuffing yourself full of pie in support of starving Africans slightly distasteful?

It did occur to me, yes. BTW Jethro, your pie seems to lack a preposition. You could say stuffing yourself full of PIES and be a bit more Australian.

I believe you mean the indefinite article ‘a’, not a preposition. 🙂

Arsehole, creep are terms that come more readily to mind.

With those compassionate views, I certainly hope you practice the use of contraception yourself. It could certainly prevent a tragedy from unfolding.

Have you ever considered that it may be the reproductive practices of all humanity that lead to such a situation ? After all, a first world child will use many times the resources of the average third world child in their lifetimes

“Call me a hard-nosed b*tch”

Ok, you are a hard-nosed b*tch

I think hard-nosed bitch is pretty accurate. Can’t believe you can be so heartless. How about putting birth control on the back-burner and helping to save a few lives first?

that’s a bloody fine-looking pie. I’m hungry. BTW, in Australia we eat A pie, we don’t eat pie. Eating pie is American. Our pies are better than theirs and they always get a preposition.

Sadly, Cobberas is slightly right. Famines happen when there’s more people than there is food and water to sustain them. We should be doing more to prevent this happening… bloody Harradine saw to it that our foreign aid contained no family planning activity, I do hope that has been reversed now he’s gone?

I’ll go with ignorant instead.
