PLA Barracks down by the Lake?

Does anyone know the story behind what the Chinese Embassy has built on the land between their embassy and the Canberra Yacht Club?

There is a high colourbond fence surrounding what is quite a large block of land.

There are a couple of 2 story barrack type buildings that are especially ugly.

Just a beautiful location that I didn’t even know the Chinese Government owned!

Protesting in Canberra about what the Chinese do in China (regardless of how abhorrent and offensive it is – and it certainly is, make no mistake) is going to make as much difference as protesting in Beijing about what the Legislative Assembly do in Canberra. THAT was the point.

Actually, I think maybe this protest, at the seat of the Australian Government, it supposed to influence the way Australia deals with China, and through that influence the way the Chinese deal with people in this group. If they can successfully do this with all of China’s larger trading partners it might actually actually force change. On the other hand, it might not.

Personally I have found in my reading that the Chinese government has treated these guys pretty horrendously.

On the other hand, these guys seem a little on the cultish edge of the religion spectrum to me. Not exactly showing the love by actively trying to convert people to their movement in a country where that will get your organs harvested.

Sure. I understand the logic behind it. And while I commend their persistence and commitment, ultimately I don’t think having a group of 12 or so protesters permanently outside the Chinese embassy is going to make a lot of difference to the way our government deals with one of our largest trade partners. And on the very remote chance that it encouraged our government to address the issues with China, history suggests that they probably wouldn’t care at all about what we said.

I didn’t say it would work. In fact, I suspect if they just shut up the Chinese government might stop killing them so much. But who knows.

Off topic but reminds me – how are the Falun Dafa people allowed to permanently protest at Regatta Point and just what do they hope to achieve?? I have no idea what their issue is and have nothing against them other than the visual pollution of posters and banners at such prime tourist spot.

Their posters include pictures of dead and bloodied bodies, which I’d rather my young kids and I didn’t have to look at when trying to enjoy a nice walk in the sun.

Seems about as relevant for them to protest there as it would for Canberrans to protest in China over Canberra car parking prices. Except I couldn’t see any protest in China last very long.

I equate allegations of murder, torture and harvesting of human organs with the cost of car parking. TOOL.

Hey, CSRI, see the point? It’s all the way over there. Waaaaaay over there. Yep, you missed it completely. Again.

Protesting in Canberra about what the Chinese do in China (regardless of how abhorrent and offensive it is – and it certainly is, make no mistake) is going to make as much difference as protesting in Beijing about what the Legislative Assembly do in Canberra. THAT was the point.

Lots of razor wire and security cameras around the fence line now.

Errrrr, so no-one knows then ??????

It is Chinese territory and they will do with it as they please.???????????

I think they still need to meet NPA guidelines – particularly at a location on the lake

The falungong crap just goes too far sometimes. The claims they make are so outrageous that it’s often unbelievable.

So why not check out one of the UN reports, links collected here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:HappyInGeneral/Persecution_of_Falun_Gong_sources
(No, I don’t expect you to trust wiki, it’s just a convenient list of links: most of them on the UN website).

Right, read my post. Did I say they’re all untrue? Get my point – Some of their claims are so outrageous that it’s often unbelievable. Keyword there is often.

But of course, you trust everything the UN says and so you would believe everything on UN’s website. Just like the fact that UN has a mandate to ‘protect the population of Libya’ while at the same time, taking out military infrastructure of Libya beyond their mandate.

Right. Good on you on reading my post. Did I say that they’re all unbelievable? No. I said often.

And we will all believe the UN because it’s a totally democratic organisation that is not controlled by the U.S.

Here is an opportunity to troll the Chinese Government…

Might be time to make up some small randomly assembled bits of circuit board, and fling them over the fence into the building site. It’ll drive the bug sweeping techies crazy…

Just throw some fiber off cuts over the fence. I wonder if they still put effort into old school bugging or is it all remote server’s monitoring the internet and hardware tapping.

Rollersk8r is right…. free speech should extend to being an uninformed biggot, just as much as it should be extended to the truth.

Someone please hand him an Internet award.

I’m not totally against hijacking threads for some kind of personal gratification. What bores me is the same old attempts that don’t present any new, news or gossip. Here is an opportunity to troll the Chinese Government yet you are picking on the peaceful protesters that have held a long standing vigil. Picking on the simple as always.

Of course we all know that a couple bags of fertilizer and some diesel is a much better way of getting a message across. Personally I prefer the simple, dignified protests like the tent embassy. Its the more the Australian way. Its a form of “taking the piss”.

I would be interested in knowing how the Chinese think they are going to build an embassy that does not “leak”? Is it going to import all the materials and workers from China? Will they keep the original building and land? Which building will house their intelligence service?

But back to the same old simple rehashing of “not news” and all things coloured.

Ooooh you’re all so justified and sharply witty.

I thought it was pretty good too. 🙂

It probably belongs to who are a while .

Dear Chinese Government, please don’t hack my account. I’m just stirring up the riotact, honest…

You know what’s worse than torture? Being forced to watch loved ones tortured. And to quote gump, that’s all I have to say about that.

I must say, however, that surely protests need a time and a place within reason, after all, if we had a street corner for every evil on the planet we’d be out of room right away. (Though at least they did us the favour, some years back, of showing up Alexander Downer as the bastard that he is, as if we didn’t already know).

Now who’s up for another olympic relay?

Because car parking shortage and genocide are the same thing.
You’re a complete fool. Look outside the cozy little box you live in

Yes, freedom of speech is much less important than protecting your children from the truth.

Oh the irony! The sweet, glorious, astounding irony. That is priceless sir. Please let me buy you a drink.

Have all the freedom of speech you like as long as it applies to the oppressed and whatnot; just don’t exercise that right, in a free and open forum, to make the simple observation the protest is a bit ugly.

I agree. Did you know some of those protestors are hired on an hourly basis? The falungong crap just goes too far sometimes. The claims they make are so outrageous that it’s often unbelievable.

Next time, have a chat with some of the younger protestors and see what they know about their movement.

Rollersk8tr must be trolling, no one could be that ignorant or compassionless.

You’ve had your speech, other contending opinions get theirs too.

Well, protest banners are not much good if you put them where people don’t go. Although clearly they need to make them larger and more explicit, since you still have no idea what there are about.

Ooooh you’re all so justified and sharply witty.

No worse than the anti-smoking billboards our govt puts up in public places.

The same questions could be asked of the tent embassy.

Its going to be the new Chinese Embassy. The old one leaks.

It is owned by the Chinese Embassy. Confirmed by the NCA.

amarooresident310:17 am 04 Aug 11

I have a vague and probably incorrect memory that location was the the site of the Pan African Congress embassy back in the 70’s and early 80’s. PAC were a rival liberation movement to the ANC.

There’s been a sign on that site for years earmarking it as a future development location for some embassy related building…

Isn’t it the new Russian embassy?
