Hello All

Well its crunch time! I’m going to get engaged (hopefully)… As I am hopeless with anything romantic I am turning to you all to help me come up with some ideas of places in or around Canberra to pop the question.

I am planning to do it in around November, December as I am still saving for the ring.

Kippax Tavern FTW

+1 to Harry Rose Jeweller. He did our wedding rings (my husband wanted something strange) and he only made fun of us a little bit 🙂

But he did an awesome job, and was very reasonably priced. We were very happy.

I popped the question to the now Mrs Bastard on the quay at Padstow, Cornwall, England. Though that may be a bit of a trek, and the flight home, if you get rejected, may be a bit of an endurance test.

So going back to the mountain top theme, the walk to the top of Booroomba Rocks in Namadgi, isn’t too hard, and the views from there are stunning. Although, if you are going to, you may as well go the whole hog, and take her to the highest point in Australia, Mt. Kosciusko, which is an easy stoll to the top, and pop the question there.

(We’re all assuming thet the question is; “Will you marry me,” and not, “any chance of a BJ love”, I take it)

Him: Before I ask a question that may be a life-changing event for you, you need to know that I’m a golf fanatic…I live and breathe golf. Is that a problem?

Her: No, I can accept that as long as you understand that I am a hooker.

Him: No problems, you just need to loosen up your wrists during the follow-through.

Boom tish.

I popped the question down at the Carillion at night time. Lovely views of all the lit-up buildings surrounding the lake.

And a suggestion for the ring, use Harry Rose jewellery. An awesome local jeweller who created the perfect engagement ring for me!

How about you drive her up to Mount Stromlo one evening and take her into the ruin of the old observatory – i.e. the big circle-shaped thing with no roof that you can walk into. It’s nice and spooky and has a nice Canberra significance (if that’s your thing). Plus the acoustics inside the ruin itself are really awesome so you get your hear the echo of yourself proposing.

I kinda like this idea, although last I tried to drive up they had locked the gate, so it might be a bit of a walk from the car.

The Holy Grail… I hear that’s a classy place.

your favourite resteraunt…. as a couple you should have a favourite place to go right?

give them a call and organise something special. go down there early and set things up, and if funds permit maybe even ask them if they can do it on a night they are normally closed for extra special attention? it’ll cost you much more, but also opens the posibilites too… clearing of tables, mood lighting (candles everywhere), choice of music etc.

the bigger the effort the better.

and dont ask her how she’d like to be proposed to beforehand!
(obviously you guys have maybe talked about things prior though)

Just at that moment in ‘those’ movies when the look in her eye (assuming you’re missionaries of course) means you’re her greatest hero, hold the action, reach over and grab the little ring box, give her a geezer and tell her you’re not finishing the job til she says Yes Yes Yes…

If she’s keen to get married, and it’s a surprise, I don’t think it matters where you do it. She’ll be stoked regardless.

FTR though I think that even asking her in your own house (if you’ve bought one together already) can be just as meaningful and special as asking in some random park by the lake.

As for the ring, I highly recommend McGlades.

Good luck brother.

If you’re ready to pop the question you should really know the things your significant other loves to do. That should be your guide.

My partner loves flying in helicopters so for my proposal, I chartered a flight through Aquila Helicopters and we flew to lunch at Lamberts Winery. Lamberts were really helpful and accomodating and even mowed a special landing strip for the occasion. Lunch was fantastic and the food and wine were both great. After lunch we did an aerial tour of the LBG area and I popped the question hovering at 1000 feet between PH and the War Memorial.

It wasn’t nearly as expensive as it sounds and was a really awesome and unforgettable experience.

Both Aquila Helicopters and Lamberts were fantastic and easy to deal with. Thanks to them everything went off without a hitch and we had a perfect day.

How very very cool, never knew such a thing existed in Canberra !~

Parkland surroundings, flowers and ribbons on site…

I love this idea!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, although towards the end there things got a little crazy.
Just to answer a few enquiries;
Yes I do have someone to ask
I don’t mind spending money
McDonalds is great idea but not for me
Any tavern would be perfect for me, not so much for her
The hot air balloon… not so much, although lovely I would like the moment just to be for us..
The Raiders game…
I do like the idea of some were that has meaning to us both, and the lake and mountains would be perfect
Thanks again for your help, but keep the suggestions coming please

Oh write it on a sheet and tie it onto one of the bridges around town that you drive under, totally classy.. Although the number of rock throwing fences on bridges may prevent you doing that..

Nah, the anti rock fence just gives you a good thing to cable tie it to.

Take her on a mystery tour.
Tell her you have a surprise for her and go for a drive. Keep her guessing as to the final destination by driving to, but right past, certain locations, (ie past the Black Mountain turnoff, around the roundabout but past Grevillia Park, etc) until you arrive at your final destination.

I did this once many years ago (I think we ended up at the Boathouse for dinner) but it will either build up the suspense, or she’ll think she’s dating an axe-murderer and you’re trying to find the most secluded spot to do her in. lol

🙂

Go to a place that is special to the both of you already. Maybe somewhere that you have been for a really special dinner or date, something of significance. And introduce something she really likes into the proposal – for example if she has a passion for a colour gift wrap the ring in that colour… Along those lines.

I proposed to my wife in a friend’s back garden -we happened to be standing on top of a septic tank. That didn’t mean much to me at the time, but my wife has never let me forget it.
.

So does she always say your marriage has gone to shit? 🙂 Nah just kidding.

As already suggested, around the lake during a sunset or over dinner. The Boat House by the lake during sunset is stunning, Aubergine, or possibly the revolving restaurant on Telstra tower.

don’t do it!

I assume you have someone to ask?

If you do, find out what he/she thinks would be the perfect proposal. Then do that.

Enlist one of their close friends to help you find this out if you are not confident about broaching the subject without giving the game away(as long as they can keep a secret!).

Good luck.

Canberra has so many venues where it is romantic…none of them cost money

grunge_hippy12:22 pm 14 Jul 10

my husband asked me (read: gave me the box, assumed he was asking me) on our couch. so romantical.

trust me, we women remember!

I like the picnic by the lake, summer evening, nice.

+ for the mountain top idea. It can be harder to plan in advance though, since nice weather is clearly a plus. Personally I think sunset in the way to go, cause I don’t like getting up early.

Definately on a balloon. I was one one when a guy proposed to his girlfriend. It was so romantic. Was so jealous! Better than my partners “lets get married”
Ho hum

Mountain top. You don’t have to go all the way to Kosciuszko though, there are some lovely places nearby and again if she says no, you can just walk your separate ways down Mount Ainslie!!

The cheetah lookout spot at the Zoo…. its slighty off the beaten path right in front of a man made waterfall. Its a stunning view !

I proposed to my wife in a friend’s back garden -we happened to be standing on top of a septic tank. That didn’t mean much to me at the time, but my wife has never let me forget it.

So while we blokes may laugh, the choice of venue is important. I would go for a drive up to the mountains. Kosciusko is pretty spectacular, and there are some pretty cosy and romantic accommodations in Thredbo.

I popped the question during a nice quiet and quite romantic weekend away to Gundaroo and the surrounding Canberra wine region. This was at the end of August, so it was still pretty cold out there, but the warm fires at Grazing helped with the romance!

The drive back can also be beautiful, taking the Murrumbateman route with a stop off at Poachers Pantry for lunch. Alternatively, you can take the quick way back, through Queanbeyan, if the answer isn’t what you had hoped.

Best of luck, Hank.

The ring her food would be a bad idea.

stereo henry10:20 am 14 Jul 10

buy some television advertising during her favourite program and do a piece to camera (hopefully she prefers late night infomercials as opposed to masterchef or it could set you back some)

MrNurseRatchet10:18 am 14 Jul 10

I was thinking that the scenic lookout in the centre of Tidbinbilla would be good.

Unless you’re VERY sure of the answer hot air balloons are a bad option.

Do you want to be bolted in with 8 strangers for half an hour after that kind of rejection.

Picnic by the lake would be my bet.
