Places to Run After Work in Canberra?

I became addicted to running during the warmer, longer days but now with it getting dark earlier, I was wondering if anyone knew of the best (safest) places to run after 5.30pm?

Lake Burley Griffin generally has a lot of people around with boot camps and such and is pretty well lit, but I am wondering if there is anywhere else? I am not talking all hours of the night, just say until 7pm?

Thanks

Just reviving a dead thread.

I need to find a lit oval in Belconnen, preferably still lit at around 9.00 weekdays.

Any ideas?

I think you will struggle to find anything still lit at 9pm. Even the semi-pros draw a line at training at 9pm during Canberra winters, they would be covered in dew (if not frost).

You can hire treadmills for about $100 per month or so (various places in Fyshwick), just to get you through the winter.

Like LSWCHP says, you’re only going to find lit ovals if someone’s actually using them for training. You may need to do this research yourself, by heading out in the evenings and seeing which ovals are lit up, and when. Chances are any one oval won’t be lit every night.

Might help to mention which part of Belconnen you’d prefer too.

The ovals in Giralang behind the primary school on Canopus crescent have been used for evening training by a variety of sporting teams for a long time. I don’t know the details, but you should be able to contact someone at Belnorth soccer club (for example) and find out when the lights are on. A few years ago (and possibly currently) a Gridiron mob was also training there at least one night per week.

No-ones raping you around the lake in winter. They are too busy being cold, bundled up in front of a blow heater in Bega flats.

As an extra security precaution- draw a goatie on your face an youll be sweet.

I go early in the morning, safe as houses then, everywhere.

I don’t have stats and don’t want to go digging now but I’ve read in more than one place that a lot of rapes and muggings take place in early morning (very early morning) because nobody is around and it’s often dark as well! I think after about 7 it would be okay but I’ve heard 5 or 6 it’s actually not pretty safe. Depends how early you meant I guess…

I recommend Lake Burley Griffin, the populated places.

There are friendly, sociable runs with small to medium to large packs held every week in Canberra. Sundays at 10am, Mondays (two different groups) from about 6pm, Wednesdays from 6pm, first Thursday of the month from just after 6pm, and others at various times.

Various locations. This Monday you have a choice of Belconnen Labor Club or the back of the War Memorial for a starting and finishing point.

For details, go to http://www.hhh.asn.au and click on the little map of the ACT.

New runners and walkers ALWAYS welcome.

On On!

As per what others have said, wear a headtorch so others can see you.

Something with discreet reflective patches works wonders too.
If someone has decent(aggressive?) lights you can be seen much further,
makes you their problem.

Stromlo Forest Park has dedicated grass running track, no lights though or you could do some cross country running on the singletrack, watch out for MTBers though.

can easily run to parliment house at night, plus you’re allowed to run 3/4 of the way of the grass to the top. Just dont cross the fence. 😉

If you want to freak yourself out, go for a run up Mt Ainslie after dark (have lights).

Apart from that, the bridge to bridge part of the lake is good, or combinations of the other paths in Commonwealth park. Except for a couple of spots it’s well lit. I usually have a torch for the dark spots as I don’t like the idea of stuffing an ankle on some of the rougher spots.

When it gets colder the treadmill at the gym gets more use, although that isn’t as good as running outside for exercise, the warmer air inside is better if you have asthma, as the cold air will have you wheezing quickly.

We run between 5:30pm and 7pm at Parliament House every Monday night, and will be starting at Dickson oval (under lights) same time Thursdays after Easter (if the works there are finished). To run with us, the cost is zero. We are the “speedygeese” – google it. Anyone can join in.

Is there anywhere outdoors in Canberra that’s light at 7pm in winter? No.

+1 for getting up early. You know you’re alive after a few km’s running below zero.

everywhere is as safe as everywhere else. Any local school oval or sporting oval that has lights if you want to do track type work. run around the parliament house square if you like. bike paths – but if you do PLEASE make sure you wear blinkies front and back so others can see you. At least if you run round the lake there’s the company of others and there are still heaps of people around there or passing at that time of night.

I go early in the morning, safe as houses then, everywhere.
