Anyone feel like a field trip?

WHAT CAN THE MONARO TELL US ABOUT EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL VOLCANOES?

Led by: Dr Jonathan Clarke and Dr Ian Roach

Date: Saturday, 27 April 2013
Time: Start at 8:00am sharp and finish at about 3:00pm
Location: Meet at Cooma MacDonald’s (24 Sharp St, Cooma NSW). Cooma is about 1.5 hours south of Canberra’s CBD.
Are you interested in Mars exploration? Heard about the active volcanoes on the Jovian moon Io? Join a small group of enthusiasts and leading planetary geologists Dr Clarke and Dr Roach for a fun and informative field trip exploring the Monaro’s ancient volcanic sites. What can this region tell us about volcano sites on Mars? Can the effect of time and weather on Earth help us to identify landmarks on Martian landscapes as extinct volcanoes, perhaps eroded when Mars had abundant liquid water?

Registrations Required:

All are welcome. There are no charges for the field trip but registration is required. To register please email your name, email address and mobile phone number to aiaa.sydneysection@gmail.com by Tuesday 23 April.

What to bring:

This is a self-drive and walking excursion. Please remember to bring a hat, sunscreen and wear long pants and sturdy walking shoes. Bring a large bottle of drinking water and your own lunch and money to cover personal expenses. A light 4WD vehicle should suffice and car-pooling may be considered at Cooma. We will be walking on tracks, paths and rough ground for distances of up to 1.5 km per site. We will be going regardless of the weather, which may change during the day. So dress accordingly and make sure to pack some cold-weather/wind proof clothes in case. Insect repellent may be handy if it is hot. Definitely bring a note book and camera! On the day, Dr Clarke can be contacted on 0418 401 612.

Safety:

This is an informal and voluntary affair, on public and private land (with the owner’s permission). People’s safety is their own responsibility. Show due care when walking on trails and rough ground and special care when beside roads, as some may be busy. Only one barbed wire fence needs negotiating and there should be enough people to frighten away any self-respecting snake.

This looks GREAT! Thanks for posting!

I like the notion of a self-respecting snake. As opposed to one that has shed its self-respect.

Thanks for posting this Barcham – you saved me the trouble.

Just a reminder to anyone who wishes to participate that theyy must register by Tuesday 23 April. Please email your name and mobile contact number to aiaa.sydneysection@gmail.com so we know who to expect!
