Canberra’s Best Plumbers

129
O&B Plumber

O’Neill & Brown Plumbing Service are rated one of Canberra’s best plumbers.

Whether you need to fix a dripping tap, install a toilet or unblock a pipe, there’s only one person you should call: a licensed plumber.

A licensed plumber is trained to install and maintain pipes in homes and other types of buildings. When the hot water system stops working or waste ends up where it shouldn’t be, you need a plumber – and fast.

Remember to avoid the temptation to resolve a plumbing issue on your own. Not only can this be dangerous, but it may lead to difficulties making an insurance claim if your work causes additional damage.

What makes a great plumber?

Good plumbers have the skills and experience to fix blocked pipes, re-plumb a house, and do everything in-between. But there’s more to being a great plumber than just technical abilities. Soft skills matter too.

Keep the following in mind before choosing a plumber.

  • Reliable and respectful of your property. A plumber should arrive on time and ready to work. The best treat customers’ homes like their own – this means keeping mess and disruption to a minimum while being careful with your belongings.
  • Effective communication. You shouldn’t need a plumbing qualification to understand what your plumber is talking about. A great plumber is willing to discuss the job at a level you can understand.
  • Transparent pricing. Your plumber should be upfront with you about how much things will cost. Quotes and invoices should be transparent, with no unexpected fees or charges.
  • Quality parts and products. While using cheaper parts will save money in the short term, they generally don’t last as long and will need to be replaced sooner. For longevity and real value for money, look for a plumber that uses the best part or product for the job – not the one that costs the least.
  • Appropriate licences and insurances. In the ACT, all plumbers need to be licensed and meet eligibility requirements (such as having completed a relevant qualification). Double check that your chosen plumber is licensed and has current public and products liability insurance to protect you if work doesn’t go to plan.

O’Neill & Brown Plumbing Service

O’Neill & Brown Plumbing Service

If your hot water system is broken, your drains or sewers are blocked, or you need new plumbing as part of a bathroom renovation, give O’Neill & Brown Plumbing Service (ONBPS) a call. Founded in Queanbeyan over 50 years ago, ONBPS prides itself on strong workmanship, use of high quality genuine parts and products and extensive employee training.

ONBPS ensures that every job meets its customers’ high standards. All plumbers are employed by the company – it does not hire contractors. In addition, ONBPS provides internal training to set expectations for attention to detail and treating customers’ homes as their own. Every job is photographed, and time-stamped photos are sent to head office to ensure work meets stringent quality requirements.

Most of ONBPS’ business comes from referrals. Its customers appreciate regular communication (including advance notice of delays), that work is explained before it begins, and that plumbers keep the work site neat and tidy.

Offering a comprehensive range of general and preventative plumbing services, ONBPS aims to minimise running costs and extend the life of your waterworks so you can enjoy safe, functional plumbing for years to come. Its team is also qualified to deal with potentially dangerous gas leaks, and to service gas connections and appliances.

Here’s what customer Carmel had to say about ONBPS on Google Reviews: “Prompt service. On time. Daniel was polite and respectful. Straight down to work and explained each step to me. It was an easy, quick fix for a blocked bath drain even though another Canberra plumber had lead me to believe it was going to be a complex job. Could not have been happier with the service and would absolutely recommend.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a plumber or electrician to service my electric hot water heater?
Your best bet would be to find a fully-licensed plumber who holds a restricted electrical license as well. Your plumber can handle the majority of hot water issues with these two qualifications. Regrettably, electricians are unable to gain a dual-qualification that allows them to work on the plumbing aspects of electrical appliances as well.
Can I do my own plumbing work?
You’re only allowed to replace a tap washer without a license in the ACT. All other plumbing work will require a licensed plumber. If you choose to DIY and you’re caught, you will likely void your home insurance or end up facing a fine from Access Canberra. Why take the chance? Call a licensed plumber!
Do plumbers need to be licensed?
Yes, absolutely! You’ll need a licensed plumber to legally complete all your plumbing work. In the ACT, all licensed plumbers are required to display their license number on all advertising. You can then check their number on Access Canberra's website: https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au/app/services/licence/#/plumber
When should I call an emergency plumber?
Whenever plumbing fails, it can cause damage to your home and contents. It can also cause discomfort, or even be a major health risk, to your family and even your neighbours! Emergency plumbing issues can range from a toilet not flushing to a burst pipe that’s highly destructive, a failing hot water system or an overflowing sewer – whatever the cause, you can and should call an emergency licensed plumber immediately to fix any problem.
Can I use a handyman to do simple plumbing jobs around the house?
No, unless they are also a licensed plumber. If not, it’s illegal to hire a handyman to do any plumbing. There are laws to prevent unqualified or unlicensed individuals from doing plumbing, and using one might cause your insurance to be voided. Unlicensed people performing plumbing are also liable for large fines, so don’t risk it!

Thanks to the review on this site I found Andrew McReynolds Plumbing. I had a blocked drain and Andrew was able to assist me in a timely and professional manner. Andrew has great customer skills, is willing to assist and his rates are very reasonable. I can highly recommend him.

I am rapt that I found Andrew McReynolds Plumbing. I had tree roots in a pipe and read the reviews here but couldn’t tell which ones were legit. Believe me when I say that Andrew was a godsend. He was skilled and good natured and very reasonably priced for what was a murky and time consuming job. I highly recommend him. And that’s legit.

Avoid at all costs the following, they are all the basically same company:
Canberra Blocked Drain Services
Canberra Emergency Hot Water Solutions
Canberra Hot Water Systems and Repairs
Canberra Solar Hot Water Solutions
P1 Plumbing and Electrical Services
Priority One Plumbing and Electrical Services
North Canberra Plumbing
Roof Plumbing Canberra
Sam’s Local Plumbing
Tuggeranong Plumbing
Your Local Plumber ACT

Smart website, call centre, and charged me over $13k for work which they said would take over a week, and ended up taking barely three days with downtime. Manager got threatening and aggressive when I questioned the bill. Awful.

Diane Fortescue Diane Fortescue 6:31 pm 13 Jul 19

Had Tuggeranong Plumbing come and do a quote to replace an inlet valve, cost of a new inlet valve $15-$30 at the most. Half an hour job if that, cost $412 plus gst. Have another plumber coming tomorrow for the same job quarter of the price. Would not recommend this company, maybe they just didn’t want the job. But he could of done it there and then easy money. feel really ripped off still paid the call out fee of $49 plus gst.

Hi Diane … I also have plumbing issues and am wondering how you went with that second plumber? And would you mind sharing his name / contact please?

+1 for Running Plumbing. Damien is excellent – professional, trustworthy, reasonable and quick. Definitely should be in the best plumber lists 🙂

Rocan Rocan 8:21 am 22 Jan 19

Absolutely appalled by Priority One. We lost hot water, called them out, and were quoted $1100 for a fix that may not last long in their words, or $4500 to replace the whole system. Time for another quote, Spencer and Sons came out, replaced the thermostat for $200, job done. Priority One are charlatans, stay clear.

We Just used Duncan’s Plumbing to repair a disconnected sewage pipe. They were prompt, communicative, efficient, friendly and did a beautiful job. Their invoice was the most comprehensive I’ve ever seen, describing and itemising the work in detail. I’ll be employing them again within a month for more work that we need doing. Fantastic job

Check out the guys from “Emergency Plumbers Canberra” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoymXMf8n-k
They answered promptly arrived quickly and took a reasonable price.

Running Plumbing (Damian Peacock) is the plumber with the mostest. He responded quickly,
and was very honest and reliable. The price was right, and he made sure the problem was fixed before we paid. Can’t recommend him highly enough.

I would not recommend priority one plumbing. The plumber was 1 hour late (told us to come between 10am – 2pm, came at 3pm), and he did fix the problem (leaky tap). The pricing system though, is very “confusing” or should I say tricky, my impression is they still charge the same whether you used the “coupon” or not. They tell you higher price if you asked to use the coupon anyways. Conclusion: they can probably fix problems but customers are definitely note their priority and they try to trick you and charge more. I read this article and went with priority one, but regretting it. I would stick with my local plumber from next time.

robplm robplm 11:08 pm 16 Dec 17

I would not recommend priority one plumbing for clearing roots from drains. I had them in and they were unsuccessful ($420 for nothing) and suggested replacing everything. I instead called capital city plumbing who had no trouble clearing drain and for less than half the price. ($187)

    Frustrated Frustrated 10:34 am 09 Jan 18

I used them recently was charged for 3 1/2 hrs Labour and a piece of copper pipe, $1234.00

When i asked for an itemised invoice, I got the following response in email.

“Our organisation has a lot more involved than just the hours on site. Planning and set up and material orders management etc

The prices account for all these things so a can provide a quality service with quality trades”

I think the franchise owner thought he could take advantage of someone desperate for plumbing services early in the new year.

Product review website suggests this company has some history of overcharging and bad work.

Damian Peacock from Running Plumbing is great. We have used him twice now over five years. He is easily contactable by phone or email, returns our calls and emails, attends and fixes our problems very promptly, and goes to some trouble rescheduling other jobs to sort our problems out. We are very impressed with him. Next time we need a plumber, he’s it!

Tim Butler Tim Butler 7:04 pm 06 Nov 17

Anthony from Blueline plumbing and Gas. Extremely high attention to details, is clean and reliable and very transparent as to what he does and your options (including the costs associated with each and his recommendations). Would recommend every time. Website is http://www.bluelineplumbers.com.au

Thank you RiotACT for saving the day with this good list.

I wish I had checked out the list a bit earlier.

The tap connected to the hose was a bit shaky and I was probably waiting for a disater to happen.

The disaster never happened as i got David to the resuse, Nice guy, did a good job and was econimical

I would surely recommend him to be added to the list as well.

http://dlplumbing.com.au/ – Thank you google !

My 2 cents.

Mark at Tap Doctor reliable, reasonably priced, tidy and on time. Forget ” Your Local Plumber” unless you want to take out a second mortgage.

An old thread, but wanted to add my +1 for Flow Plumbing. They came out this morning, promptly and when they said they would, cleared up an ugly sewer blockage quickly and efficiently, and charged a reasonable price to do it. Nice blokes. too. While I hope never to need their services again, if I do they’ll the be first ones I call.

Based on my recent experience I’d recommend Watertight Plumbing. These guys are excellent: superb communication and customer service – in a class of their own for tradies in Canberra. http://www.watertightcanberra.com.au/

We had a major leak on a Saturday. Couldn’t get our usual plumber on the phone. After trawling through these comments, I rang Raiders Plumbing’s emergency line. A woman answered and told me she would get the plumber to ring back shortly. He did. To cut a long story short, we had excellent service from Raiders Plumbing and I would certainly recommend them. (Thanks RiotACT!)

Our usual plumber – Rodney Apps – is also very good.

Might be a bit late for you Mikonos, however if anyone else is stuck please have a read of a blog post I wrote on leaking showers.
Definitely the most important thing is that your plumber will provide you with a detailed report at the end of his testing so that you can be sure they have not missed any of the 9 main causes of shower leaks. You may also end up using this report for insurance claims, etc.

Hi Spindain

I’m a plumber here in Canberra, and I can’t tell you how often I hear of cases like this. Below are a few tips you may like try before booking in your next tradesman. The whole process shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes.

Business Check –
Make sure the business you are employing are at the very least a registered business. Use the below link. Legally all businesses should have their Australian Business Number on their website, however if they don’t then you can search using their business name as well.
http://abr.business.gov.au/

License Check –
Certain trades require a licensed tradesman and the work cannot be done by just any old handy man.
The reason for this is pretty obvious. Water is the number one cause of damage to buildings and property. Poor quality drainage creates major health risks from sewage and sewage gases. A build-up of unburnt gas or damaged gas appliance due to incorrect pressure can cause explosions and poor electrical work can kill. Legally the license number should be written on all forms of advertising including their website, vehicle sign writing, etc.
These trades include
• Plumbing and Drainage
• Gas fitting
• Electrical work
• Asbestos Removal
For licensed trades in Canberra use the below website to check that their license is current
http://www.planning.act.gov.au/topics/hiring_licensing/employ-a-professional

For licensed trades in NSW use the below website to check that there license is current
http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/

Next Step –
Existing Customer Feedback – Google the company name… This will take you all of 2 minutes and can dig up any unhappy customers pretty quickly. Not only that, it will most likely bring up a few customer reviews that you can check out yourself.
http://www.google.com.au

And lastly

See their website or ask them whilst booking in for
• Proof of insurances
• Methods of payments and payment terms

Hopefully this guide helps you out next time you’re booking in a tradesman.

As mentioned at the start, I am a Plumber. My name is Tom Martin and I own Water Tight Canberra, Canberra’s reliable plumbing, drainage and gasfitting service. I am extremely proud of the way I have built my business by providing high quality customer service. All of my staff have regular customer service training and we will always try our best to go that extra step to ensure customer satisfaction. If you book in a job online you can save 10% off the service call fee.
See http://www.watertightcanberra.com.au or call us on 02 61959991
