Police are investigating a ‘dog baiting’ incident in Higgins on Wednesday.

Police were called to a residence in Higgins after reports that CCTV footage captured a man throwing an item into a backyard about 5am that morning.

Meat covered in a green chemical substance was located in the backyard.

Fortunately, the dogs at the location did not ingest the substance and were not harmed.

Police believe this to be an isolated incident.

If you can assist police in identifying the man in the footage, or saw anything suspicious in Higgins yesterday at 5am, we urge you to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or report via the website at act.crimestoppers.com.au. Provide reference number 5948263.

To those saying that it’s somehow OK to poison a dog because you happen to live near a dog that barks all the time, I’m just curious if you have attempted to talk to neighbours about it? Maybe record it or write a complaint but certainly don’t poison it. The owner stated he left his dogs in at night. Ppl sometimes bait a dog to break into a house or maybe it was a revenge thing. I’m a Higgins resident and dog owner. My dog stays in at night and will only bark if he hears unfamiliar noise. There are a lot of dog owners on our street, some occasionally bark at night but I think it makes our neighbourhood safer. There were a couple that were a bit yappy when they were left alone and owners were not home, the owners didn’t realise how loneley or distressed their animals would get when they would leave and were actually relieved to be told and they started leaving more toys and treats for the dog or the radio on for it when they went out, which helped. Thank goodness, it was pretty distressing to hear. It distressed and would drive me a little bonkers. I had someone who kept feeding my dog soup bones and scraps over the fence and I asked him to stop and it still happened. It was not poisoned from what I could tell but soup bones aren’t safe and could have made my dog really ill. Not only that it makes me suspicious because maybe I’m being a little paranoid but what was the dude’s angle? If he feeds dog and gets its trust it hardly makes my dog a good guard dog if he wanted to break in. Luckily my dog is too loyal now to take bait but I had to yell at my dog every time this asshole fed him in order to teach him. It was horrible but had to be done in case this person made my dog sick. If you happen to be readng this and u r the @#%* Don’t feed other ppl animals! Have some respect for boundaries. My dog never barks unless someone walks past the gate or in the driveway and he will do it once or twice and stop. I know this because I’m home all day so no excuse for that kind of behaviour!!!!

I have a dog behind me that hasn’t stopped barking in 5 years I don’t even understand how the owners can stand it.

You are not in Kaleen are you? Might be the same dog that has been bugging me for 5 years! 🙂

Poor dogs! Never bark! What rot. People don’t even hear their own dog barking all night. Why should someone have to put up with this nonsense? Just a report should put an end to all inconsiderate behaviour of the owners. They get a dog and go to work leaving the dog to bark and annoy everyone around them. I can’t understand why they are allowed to get a dog unless prepared to train, walk and clean up after them. Many dog owners think they have special rights. Walking around Yerrabi Pond is a good example when they won’t put the dog on a leash and certainly won’t clean up after them.
Not the dogs who should be poisoned.

No. Not really. People are pretty good really, and some of them absolutely fantastic, it’s just that you don’t notice the majority because you’re focused on the few.

Yeah for what it’s worth the guy could just be a sociopath. One of my friend’s dogs physically couldn’t bark due to an illness it had as a pup, and did nothing all day but eat and sleep under a tree in the backyard. Didn’t stop some callous jerk baiting it. Unfortunately it didn’t survive. Unfortunately society is just full of mean-spirited a-holes.

Dog owners really need to train their dogs not to bark all day when their at work. Its just like bad kids, its never their little angles causing the problems. I have a dog behind me that hasn’t stopped barking in 5 years I don’t even understand how the owners can stand it.

Tams wont do anything about so what can you do?

Well this is the answer someone has come up with im not condoning it, but as a shift worker I can understand why he might come to this.

Are you implying this owner’s dogs bark all day? It could be that the baiter simply hates dogs. If they do bark though, how can you be sure that this owner knows about it? And if the baiter had done the right thing and complained to the owner first then he would have been known to the owner and identifiable from the video.

You might have done the right thing about your neighbour’s dog but that doesn’t mean that everyone else does.

Have you gone through the process of documenting the barking etc.? I understand there is some process which can (eventually) lead to the dog being debarked if nothing else works.

My Siberian Husky was baited twice – and survived twice. She very rarely barked, and if she did it was not without reason. What makes you think the dogs were baited because of barking? Talk about jumping to conclusions.

If this little t$&d gets found, I suggest he be given what he was happy to give the dogs!

In reality though, not just letting my anger express itself, if he is caught, the courts should deal really severely with him. The maximum penalty, whatever that is. It is a totally unacceptable way to deal with a problem, which he appearently has.

Maybe offering him some better ways to manage himself too, might be a good idea.

Baits are nearly always very painful for the animals who recieve them. Sounds like these dogs may have been “bait trained”, hence they were not harmed. If the dog owner knows why someone is so aggravated by their dogs, it may be good to do something about it if they can. The dogs may not be so fortunate next time.

Glad they are safe this time though.

should have called 60 minutes …
