A man known to the police has been treated in hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a shooting in the Tuggeranong suburb of Gordon last night.
The shooting occurred at Van Praag Place in Gordon at about 8:50 pm.
The man was taken to hospital after a bullet hit his left bicep in an incident that police say is gang-related.
Detective Superintendent Scott Moller said Taskforce Nemesis, set up to target organised crime, is seeking information from the public relating to the shooting.
“At about 8:50 pm, a man was parked at Van Praag Place in Gordon. Shortly after parking there, two vehicles approached the man and at some point, a shot was fired from a silver-coloured vehicle and the bullet struck the man in the left bicep,” Detective Superintendent Moller said.
Police are investigating a number of leads regarding the shooting, including the burnt remains of a silver vehicle found at Monash shortly after the shooting.
“We are still processing the crime scene and we have a number of leads that we’re investigating but none that I can share at this stage,” Detective Superintendent Moller said.
He was also not prepared to say if the shooting occurred outside the man’s home.
“The investigation is definitely pointed to a targeted attack and we believe the shooting is related to gang activity.
“There are a number of witnesses who we have already canvassed, but I believe there are a number of people out there who have witnessed the incident who are yet to come forward.”
The shooting is the first in the ACT since a spate of gang-related incidents between September and November last year.
“Criminal gang activity is always prevalent in our community and we work very hard to combat that activity through the specific taskforce that has been set up,” Detective Superintendent Moller said.
“In 2019, our taskforce laid 80 charges in relation to gang-related violence against 36 gang members. We executed 35 search warrants and seized 12 firearms.”
