The Canberrra Cycling Club has announced the cancellation of the 2012 Canberra Tour:

The Canberra Cycling Club regrets to advise that Canberra Tour scheduled for September this year has had to be cancelled.

This is the second time the club has had to postpone/cancel the event in 2012.The reason for the cancellation is due to new requirements by the Australian Federal Police before they (and ultimately TAMS) are prepared to approve the running of the event.

The recent Canberra Junior Tour with rolling road enclosures and police escorts for the Women’s NRSand Under 19’s appears to have hada flow on affect whereby the Australian Federal Police are now insisting on 3 police escorts per grade for the CT. At a cost of 450 dollars per AFP officer for a minimum of 4 hours and 7 grades run over 2 to 3 days it simply makes the tour cost prohibitive for the Club to run.

On behalf of the committee I apologise for having to cancel this years Tour. The club will now work behind the scenes to try and come to a suitable arrangements with the AFP and TAMS that will enable us to run this great event in2013.

The triathlons completely close the road in one direction (if not both) or partial road closures (one lane of a multilane road). This can be done using traffic management companies (same as roadworks) rather than AFP officers, keeping the cost a lot lower.

Thanks for your input vg.

Apologies all for my rogue ‘a’ in the original comment.

How do other sports (triathalon, Canberra Marathon etc) manage these requirements?

I imagine that they (in Canberra at least) involve a lot less road closures, and when they do, they are less likely to be rolling closures involving two cops per group.

There’s no such thing as a ‘triathalon’.

How do other sports (triathalon, Canberra Marathon etc) manage these requirements?
