ACT Policing has issued a stern warning to motorists after three separate drink driving incidents yesterday (18 August). The drivers were caught at Narrabundah, Gordon and Gungahlin.
At about 3:00 pm, police were called to a two-vehicle collision in Narrabundah. The driver of one vehicle had left the scene after failing to stop and provide details to the other party involved in the collision.
Police later identified the driver, a 61-year-old Narrabundah woman, who returned a positive result to an alcohol screening test. She was taken into custody where she returned a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.166.
The woman’s licence was immediately suspended.
In another incident, police attended a single-vehicle collision in Gordon at about 8:00 pm and subjected the driver to a roadside screening test.
A 23-year-old Gordon man tested positive for alcohol and was taken to Tuggeranong Police Station where he returned a BAC of 0.133. The man’s licence was also suspended on the spot.
Later, at about 10:00 pm, police detected a driver travelling at 106 km/h in an 80 km/h signposted area. Officers spoke with the driver and subjected him to a roadside screening test which also returned positive for alcohol.
The 22-year-old Ngunnawal man was transported to Gungahlin Police Station where he returned a BAC of 0.109. Police also suspended the man’s licence and he will face court at a later date.
The officer in charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, implored drivers to think about the dangers of drink driving and said the number of drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol was not acceptable.
“People who get behind the wheel of a vehicle when under the influence of alcohol are endangering not only themselves but everyone else that is on the road,” Det Insp Boorman said.
“When you factor in the wet weather we had last night as well, it’s surprising that no one was seriously injured. The actions of these drivers can only be described as incredibly selfish. There is never an excuse for drink driving.”
The three people will be summonsed to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.
