The joint ‘Men in Uniform’ campaign, involving ACT Policing, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) raised more than $30 000 on Saturday (November 24) for White Ribbon Day.
White Ribbon Day Ambassador and Chief Police Officer for the ACT Roman Quaedvlieg, who manned the Canberra Centre stall, said he was impressed by the community’s response, and the dedication of all forces in attendance.
“We do not tolerate violence against women, and the show of support by the community, our officers, and those of the Australian Defence Force and emergency services was outstanding,” Assistant Commissioner Quaedvlieg said.
As well as raising $30 000 — $10 000 more than the 2011 campaign — for the White Ribbon Foundation, 740 oaths were signed by members of the community at the stalls.
“While our statistics show a decrease of 24 per cent over the past three years in the number of family violence incidents attended by police, we cannot remain silent about violence against women.”
Men in Uniform stalls ran from 10am to 2pm at the five major shopping centres and the three Bunnings’ stores across Canberra.
Deputy Chief Police Officers David McLean and David Pryce manned the Westfield Woden (which raised the most amount of money) and Bunnings Tuggeranong respectively. Former Deputy Chief Police Officer Bruce Hill once again ensured his former ‘stomping ground’ was sufficiently aware of the campaign and its efforts.
Congratulations also to Bunnings Belconnen, swearing the most amount of oaths on the day (224).
ACT Policing would like to thank the Canberra Centre, Gungahlin Marketplace, Tuggeranong Hyperdome, Westfield Belconnen and Woden, and Bunnings Belconnen, Fyshwick and Tuggeranong for again accommodating the Men in Uniform stalls.
