ACT Policing is seeking to identify three men who were seen on CCTV footage with a 19-year-old woman who was later assaulted after she left the Academy nightclub in Civic during the early hours of Saturday, December 15, 2012.

The victim had been visiting nightclubs in Civic with friends on the evening of Friday, December 14, and had been affected by alcohol when she left the Academy Nightclub in Bunda Street around 12.50am.

Police would like to speak to the three men in the footage who were helping the victim before the assault and are urging them to contact ACT Policing Operations on 131-444.

ACT Policing would like to emphasize that the three men are not involved in the assault and are potential witnesses who may be able to assist in the investigation.

I would hazard a guess that it is a crop of a small part of the area that the camera covers, hence why it’s pixellated. There’s only so far you can crop and enlarge images before they turn to crap. I would go further and say it looks like it is one of the newish cameras on the corner of the ACTEWAGL building, which appears as though it covers the alley and garage entrance.

I’m not up on video cameras and such, but have seen quality images that are outstanding ( no not of Elle ). That bloke a little while ago on Riot with his helicopter that took shots of the old shell shock club. The clarity of those pictures surprised the hell out of me. That had a very small camera that didn’t cost the earth. I wonder why venues don’t upgrade. Or perhaps grainy shots suit them better. You know; we have security , but we don’t realy give a toss what happens out in the street.

The problem isn’t with capturing the images, it’s with storing them. If they need to store images from multiple cameras for weeks/months, storage costs start to blow out rapidly.

eg. 2TB per camera for a week of 5 megapixel at 20 FPS for only 12 hours a day using H.264 (fairly heavy compression).

I don’t know if licensed clubs in the ACT have a regulated retention policy, but I would expect most would keep at least a months footage.
