Double demerits this holiday period.

Police are warning local motorists of the dangers of driving irresponsibly as double demerits will be enforced this Christmas period.

Double demerits will be in place this festive season from this Friday (21 December) to New Years Day. All speed, seatbelt and mobile phone offences will incur double demerit points, while all other traffic infringements will incur one additional demerit point.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said he wanted to see everyone arrive at their destinations safely this holiday period.

“We always see an increase of traffic on our roads this time of year, roads will be busy,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.

“I would like to remind all road users to take care and be mindful of the environment around them when out on the road, and to drive to the conditions.

“Please enjoy the holiday period responsibly, and if you do drink, don’t drive – have a plan on how you’ll get home.

“This past weekend, we’ve already seen one driver involved in a collision return a blood alcohol reading of 0.122 and another pulled over who recorded a reading of 0.137. This conduct on our roads is simply unacceptable – any time of year.

“We don’t want to see anyone’s Christmas ruined because they’ve been arrested for engaging in dangerous behaviour, or because their recklessness has seriously injured or killed someone.”

I’ll take these warnings more seriously when the legal system gets some perspective on appropriate punishments for poor driver behaviour.

When you get 4 times the licence suspension for a doing a burnout compared to actually killing someone the system is fundamentally broken.
