1. Low speed pursuit:

ACT Policing arrested a 35-year-old woman on Friday morning after a low-speed pursuit through the southern suburb of Gordon.

The woman fled a random breath testing station on Drakeford Drive in Isabella Plains about 10.40am after handing police a suspended driver’s licence following a breath test.

She proceeded to drive at low speed through a number of Gordon streets, allegedly failing to stop despite police following with emergency lights and sirens activated.

She was arrested a short time later after coming to a stop in front of her residence and was transported to the Regional Watch House, where she was charged with drive whilst licence suspended, drive vehicle with suspended registration, not stop vehicle when requested by police and resist Commonwealth Public Official. She was bailed to appear in court on June 19.

The maximum speed reached during the pursuit did not exceed 45kp/h.

2. Police take an interest in exploding mailboxes:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses after two Australia Post mailboxes were damaged over the weekend in Canberra’s south.

About 12.40am Saturday (May 30) police attended Chifley shops, Chifley Place in response to reports of an explosion. On arrival, police observed an Australia Post mailbox which was alight and extensively damaged.

Police extinguished the fire and managed to recover all mail and return it to Australia Post for delivery.

In a separate incident, police were called to Monash Shops, Barraclough Crescent about 11.35pm Saturday (May 30) after reports of an explosion. On arrival, police observed an Australia Post mailbox which was extensively damaged.

Unfortunately, the mail within was completely destroyed as a result of fire damage.

In both incidents, police conducted a search of the surrounding areas however did not locate any suspicious persons.

Police suspect that fireworks may have been used to cause the explosions and would like to remind Canberra residents that the long weekend in June is the only time of the year when members of the public are legally able to use fireworks in the ACT and they may only be discharged between 5pm and 9pm on Saturday (June 5) and Sunday (June 6).

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity or persons in the area of Chifley or Monash shops around the time of the offences or who knows the identity of the offenders to contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

Why were police conducting RBT at 10:40am on a Friday morning??

I’m pretty sure that drunks will get behind the wheel ay ti of day – it’s good policing for the guys to be out checking during the day. We do’t want these people on our roads at anytime.

Agreed, I remember a large sting on Adelaide Avenue not that long ago on a Friday afternoon that netted quite a few charges?

Its going under the speed limit without a good reason, your vehicle doesn’t go that fast is one, that she was pissed is arguably another.

Shits and giggles

So the police not only have an RBT, they have a Commonwealth Public Official handy. I didn’t realise it was an offence to resist them. I anticipate many arrests at the next Centrelink christmas party

In order to be resisted you have to have a power of detention. Funny feeling Centrelink staff may well lack that one

Happy to be corrected but I think that the Aust ‘Federal’ Police rate as Commonwealth Officials. I have a very amusing mental picture of a public service christmas party with everybody trying to arrest each other though now!

It’s good for the stats. Too many drunks on the road on Friday/Saturday night. But seriously, there was an RBT on Athllon a few weeks ago at lunchtime. I saw around 6 cars abandoned on the side so I guess it is a good thing they test at all hours

She might be charged with driving too slowly! I’ve read comments on RA a few times to the effect that people feel that driving X kms below the limit is an offence.

Plainly this isn’t so, as anyone trying to come from Qbn to Canberra on the airport route will attest, as they sit behind excavators/tractors/large overloaded trucks doing 40 kms/hr. Causes traffic jams right back to the Red Rooter.

Have you seen the ads about “sleep the night, doesn’t mean your alright” People still get caught drink driving the “next day”

I would’ve thought pub closing time, on weekend nights, would have been better to net a bigger school of drunken fish (especially those who’ve been drinking like fish)?

The cops had a RBT setup at the roundabout on Lanyon Dr near Jerrabomberra at an even earlier time this morning.

I agree that they would probably catch more drunks on a Friday or Saturday night but I guess it’s about being random so people just never know when and where they will be breath tested.

Bahaha where is that git?

Or any night really.

Training maybe?

Because people forget how long it takes to metabolise alcohol. Party on big or late enough on a Thursday night and you can easily blow the bag the next morning.

According to the story in the media, she was sober, but driving on a suspended licence.

She was arrested a short time later after coming to a stop in front of her residence

It’s funny how drunks think if they make it home, they’re safe…

Knowing our Court system, she’ll have any fine and/or custodial sentence reduced for escaping below the local speed limit.

I have this image that the Police were driving a Command Vehicle (see moving office advertisement on right hand side of this page), and that the pursuit was slow because of the Police. I can just imagine this smart*#@^ old woman in a Barina singing “hee hee hee catch me if you can Police Tardis!”

That is one of the best lines I have ever read.

Those square wheels really do slow you down nowadays.

The firework she was riding had a faulty wick !?!?!?!

it really is an oxymoron, isn’t it?

Hmmm, a NOS equipped Barina?

Unless they changed where they were, how did the chase end up in Gordon? As I was heading south down Drakeford Drive at 07:00 on Friday & the RBT was in the northbound lanes (just before Athllon Drive roundabout)?

But she should of also been charged with speeding in a school zone & not keeping to the 80k limit on Drakeford Drive

I’m seeing Sideshow Bob in the wright brothers plane with the police giving chase on foot …

So, I’m allowed to blow up mailboxes as long as I do it over the long-weekend?

The cops should have called off the chase. A tortoise could have been killed!
