1. Northbourne death:

ACT Policing is investigating a collision in Braddon today (June 9) which resulted in the death of a male.

About 6pm police attended Northbourne Avenue, Braddon in response to reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

The male was deceased on police arrival, he is yet to be to be identified.

ACT Policing’s Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team are on site and are investigating the incident.

The ACT road toll for 2009 now stands at seven.

Anyone with information which may assist police with their investigations is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

2. Suspected armed robber arrested:

A 40-year-old Narrabundah man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with two aggravated robbery charges following his arrest in Dickson yesterday.

Police will allege that the man was responsible for the aggravated robbery of a pharmacy in Griffith yesterday around 12.30pm. It will be alleged that he was armed with a knife when he robbed the pharmacy, stealing a number of medications.

The man was seen entering the Dickson shops around 8pm yesterday. Detectives from ACT Policing’s Territory Investigations Group, supported by Specialist Response and Security officers, later attended an address in Davenport St, Dickson where the alleged offender was taken into custody without incident.

A number of items were seized in evidence after a subsequent search of the Dickson premises.

The alleged offender had also been sought by police in relation to the attempted aggravated robbery of the Medibank Private store in Westfield Belconnen on June 2.

Any witnesses to the aggravated robbery in Griffith yesterday who have not yet spoken to police or anyone who may have seen suspicious persons or activity in the Griffith area around 12.30pm yesterday are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

3. Tuggy Thuggies roll on:

ACT Policing is seeking two males responsible for the assault and robbery of a 17-year-old woman in Baskerville Street, Chisholm late yesterday afternoon (June 9).

The victim, from Chisholm, had alighted from a bus on Baskerville St around 5.30pm and was walking on the right side of the street in a southerly direction when she observed two males walking toward her.

One of the males has grabbed the victim and pushed her to the ground, causing her handbag to fall loose. One of the males has then emptied the contents of the bag on the ground and stolen a white wallet.

Police conducted a doorknock of the area around the crime scene and enquiries are ongoing.

The first offender is described as about Caucasian, about 6‘2” tall (188cm); heavy set with a bulky build; short, dark hair cut flat; wearing dark jeans and a grey hooded top.

The second male offender is described as Caucasian, about 6’2” tall (188cm); heavy set, with a bulky build; short dark hair; wearing dark jeans and a white hooded top.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen two males answering this description in the Chisholm area, or may have seen any suspicious activity in Baskerville Street around 5.30pm yesterday to contact Crime Stoppers.

4. Dead pedestrian named:

ACT Policing has released the name of the 40-year-old male pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle on Northbourne Avenue in Braddon last night (June 10) around 6pm.

The deceased man is Gunter Rauch, of Reid.

Mr Rauch was crossing Northbourne Avenue on foot when he was struck by a Toyota passenger car travelling south. The incident occurred about 150 metres south of the Ipima St intersection.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the incident or can provide any other information which may assist the investigation, to contact Crime Stoppers.

5. Drunk, fast, young, and on the run:

ACT Policing Traffic Operations conducted high-visibility patrols throughout the Queens Birthday long weekend.

Double demerits were in place from midnight on June 4 through to midnight June 8 for speeding and selected seat belt offences.

Traffic Operation’s Acting Superintendent Ron Melis said that the patrols were Canberra-wide and there was a particular focus on speeding and drink-driving in an attempt to modify unsafe driver behaviours.

Among the most alarming results recorded was a 28-year-old male unlicensed driver who was detected at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone on Tillyard Drive, Charnwood early Monday morning (June 8). This is particularly alarming considering the close proximity to the fatal collision on Karinga Drive, Fraser on Sunday morning (June 7).

Also, about 5pm Monday (June 8), a 21-year-old male driver was detected at 127km/h in an 80km/h zone on Adelaide Avenue, Forrest. The driver failed to stop when directed by police and when followed, was seen to drive off the roadway, onto a nature strip and stop outside a residence on Mugga Way, Red Hill.

Police arrested the driver and conveyed him to the City Regional Watch House where he returned a positive breath analysis of 0.091. He will be summonsed to face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

Over the double demerit period police issued 86 Traffic Infringement Notices and delivered 44 Cautions. A total of 19 drivers were found to have exceeded the blood alcohol limit with the highest reading being 0.194.

“There are too many drivers and motorcyclists repeatedly endangering themselves and others by speeding and drink-driving,” Acting Supt Melis said.

“ACT Policing will continue to work through the winter period to keep our roads safe for all road users.”

6. The Braddon Club must be getting sick of this:

ACT Policing is investigating two inner-city robberies that occurred this afternoon.

About 4.30pm a man entered the Civic Video store on Lonsdale Street in Braddon and demanded money, threatening staff with a knife before making off in a white utility. An amount of cash was handed over.

He is described as 50-60 years old, wearing sunglasses, a beanie and a fluorescent jacket.

In a separate incident, three men wearing balaclavas threatened staff at the Braddon Club, on Donaldson Street, with a hand gun and a knife about 5.15pm, making off with a sum of cash.

Two of the men are described as being about 180cm in height, of medium build and wearing joggers. One man was wearing a beanie and a navy jumper. The men were seen leaving the area in a white station wagon, possibly a Sigma.

No staff members were injured during either of the incidents.

Detectives from the Territory Investigations Group are investigating the two incidents, which are being treated as unrelated as this stage.

Although Canberra is one of the safest cities in Australia, businesses are reminded to make sure adequate security measures are in place so they don’t present as a vulnerable target.

Police always advise employees not to challenge an armed offender should they find themselves in this situation, but to concentrate on the offenders physical appearance, clothing, mannerisms and mode of transport as this will be extremely helpful to investigating police.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact them on 131 444 or via Crime Stoppers.

7. Have you seen Andrew?

ACT Policing is seeking the assistance of the Canberra public in locating a missing 21-year-old man, Andrew, who went missing from his Curtin home on Monday June 8 around 8.30pm.

Andrew is described as Caucasian in appearance and approximately 6′ (183cm) tall. He was last seen wearing light-grey shorts and a bright-blue hooded jumper with “repeat” written on the front in white lettering.

Andrew has a good knowledge of ACTION bus services and is known to frequent the Civic and Woden Plaza areas.

Police are concerned for the man’s welfare as he suffers from an intellectual disability and this lengthy disappearance is out of character.

Bus and taxi operators have been advised. Anyone who may have seen the missing man is urged to contact ACT Policing Operations on 131-444 immediately.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

When did i say i have the southern cross tattoo can you quote that for us all? Everyone thinks im a dickhead? well done mate your an internet tough guy.. this is all because im asking for the full story before i judge anyone? I think people will think your the dickhead for not reading what i have said. To make it better this is coming from someone with a name on RiotACT like Jim jones – the founder of the peoples temple responsible for over 900 deaths, unless of course your talking about the hip hop artist – and then that would be worth baking a cake over im pretty sure that guy has an IQ of 20 – then of course it would suit you. Try think of better response next time.

chopper, perhaps jim jones is the other person’s real name? or not. I have looked up jim jones on wikipedia. Not at all pleasant. Considering that there are many people on here not using their real names – anonymity is great, chopper isn’t a name that is revered, either, is it?

Faaaark! I’m astounded.

That should be go to gaol without passing go.

What an absolute tool.

we were very lucky he didn’t lose it, and plough into a house. tillyard drive would be the worst road to do 130 on. I used to live off it and I never even considered doing that kind of speed.

So what’s your story, Chopper? That a tiny Muslim woman decided to pick a fight and went looking for the tallest white man she could find? There’s only one person who needs to get real here, and it’s you.

Ahh i see woodymann – so you know the full story? Who knows what she did – i dont. All im saying is there is 2 sides to every story. Your assuming because she is smaller than him and a woman and muslim she is automatically innocent and cleared of any wrong-doing? so if someone walks in to a servo and robs it and the console operator tackles them to the ground.. but the junkie was smaller and a female that she is innocent? Im pretty sure bec massey is a lot smaller than the woman she stabbed yet she wont get off? your assuming the worst out of this young man and its pathetic.. Honestly then you wonder why young Australians have this attitude towards other cultures because some how it manages to turn out that the Australians are made out to be the minority… pull your head in mate.. People yell at each other for all sorts of reasons. To assume that any such yelling is automatically sexist, racist, heightist, or any other ‘ist’, is sloppy thinking. Unless the reason is known, we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

That’s extremely good news!

Chopper, the guy was 6’3. It’s a little bit of a stretch to call someone you can’t see a pussy for not intervening in a situation where a big guy is being volatile.

Chopper,

Unfortunately I came accross the incident just as it was ending. By the time I crossed the carpark the yelling had ceased and the gentleman in question had left the scene. What is more disconcerting is the lask of response from the 20 or so people sitting around the area in front of the library.

I am sorry I did not arrive earlier so as to provide a more detailed account of the circumstances.

Just thought it was pretty lame to get stuck into someone that way, with added racial barbs – no matter what she had done.

Having been through racially motivated abuse at primary school I have empathy – sorry

I’m more strayan than you Chopper, OI OI OI!

We don’t scream abuse at anyone, hopefully. People who scream abuse at others have something wrong with them, possibly they have a mental illness that is not controlled. It should never be tolerated for any reason, by anyone. We need to establish a zero tolerance for this behaviour because currently, it seems that people sometimes assume that there’s a valid reason for it. There’s never a valid reason for it.

Rightyo.. im not defending the person and i didnt say yelling at a women is being a man -(where did you get that from?) im saying Herscie was not being a man for not doing anything…. im also asking what the full story was? C’mon lets get real about these kinds of things people – stop following the crowd – Do you assume racism is only towards anyone who isnt white? how do you know she was not racist first? IT doesnt matter if the male was 4ft and she was 7ft it would still be racism but i believe that you have not got the full story… never in my whole life have i seen something like this in canberra and your justification for everything on here is label people Rednecks especially people with southern cross tattoos – i personally believe thats pathetic your talking about people who are proud to be australian, yes some will be these extremist wankers but there in every country – stop using this as a way to put people down and discriminating against people with it because i dont believe everyone with the southern cross tattoo is a racist. I also believe if your good enough to whinge about something you are good enough to fix the problem.

Or Athllon between Mawson dve and Beasley St. I assume it is people returning to Torrens from Southlands, but seem happy to run across the peak traffic despite the dark and rain and cars doing 80+ kph.

Herscie id assume that you know the full story? Was it just a blatant attack on a muslim for no reason? What happened? If it was a racist attack for no reason and felt injustices being done why didnt you step in and do something? Why post something on here? Its a bit gutless… i mean you’d rather speak about it on here than actually fix the problem or at least attempt to! Thats not being a man. I mean what are you hoping to prove by putting it on here? My advice to you would be next time to atleast calm the situation down and find out what happened i mean for all you know she could have crashed a car in to his or something..

No Chopper, No. Even if a women hits your car you do not have the right to yell and scream abuse. Screaming at a women is not ‘being a man’.

On racist abuse – in my experience the right response to racist abuse (whenever you encounter it) is to intervene and ask the victim of the abuse to follow you into shop, cafe etc. (i.e. somewhere public) and quietly apologise for the knob and his rediculous attitude. The racist can be simply ignored and treated for the ignorant tools that they are. You can’t reason with a racist, trust me I’ve tried on quite a few occassions. What you can do, however, is kindly refer them to track 8 of Lilly Allen’s new album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ITZBBV8Syg)

+1 Caf. Someone crashing into a car is justification for a 6’+ male abusing a 5’+ female – not even if the situation was reversed. Verbal abuse is assault, and rightly so.

Maybe next time she’ll return her book on time.

Description sounds like the angry bloke who smashed Lainey on the Tweed Ride in O’Connor on Saturday arvo.

I think we just found the redneck in question.

I hope they don’t leave his shoes lying about. One of the saddest things you see on the roadside is a shoe, you always hope they just fell off a car or bike, not a person.

Re #3, The police would be looking for the hounds of Baskerville St. hmmm ?
