1. Despite letting Neighbourhood Watch wither on the fine here in Canberra we’re supporting the national conference:
- ACT Policing is supporting this year’s Australasian Neighbourhood Watch/Support Advisory Board Conference being hosted in Canberra.
The event runs for fours days from this Sunday (November 9) until the following Wednesday (November 12), and delegates will include community members and police from all Australian states and Territories and New Zealand.
The conference will include presentations from the Chief Police Officer Michael Phelan, ACT Police Minister Simon Corbell and the President of Australasian Neighbourhood Watch Tess Walsh. Guest speakers will include the Executive Director of SupportLink Australia Tony Campbell and Tony Cornish from Country Wide Media. Each of the states and territories and New Zealand will also give an idea of the success of Neighbourhood Watch programs in their respective areas.
Participants will also attend the Remembrance Day service at the Australian War Memorial on Tuesday (November 11). At the end of the service a wreath will be laid by Tess Walsh.
ACT Policing’s Chief Police Officer Michael Phelan recognised the importance of the Neighbourhood Watch in Canberra.
“Public contribution is an important aspect of community based policing. Members of the community are our eyes and ears and we rely heavily on the information they provide to police about suspicious and criminal activity.”
“I congratulate the Neighbourhood Watch programs on their continued contribution in all states and territories across Australia and in New Zealand,” said CPO Phelan.
Neighbourhood Watch/Support is Australasia’s largest community based crime prevention program and has a very proud history.
This year sees Western Australia and Victoria celebrate 25 years of community based crime prevention initiatives while other Australian states, Territories and New Zealand have also achieved significant milestones.

2. The St Edmunds fire announcement has made its belated way online:
- ACT Policing is investigating a suspicious fire at St Edmunds College, Griffith at about 10.15pm lastnight (November 8).
ACT Fire Brigade attended the scene and extinguished the flames, containing the fire to a storeroom containing sporting equipment. Damage to the equipment is estimated at approximately $20,000.
AFP Forensic Services attended the scene this morning and will work with ACT Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the fire.

- ACT Policing is investigating several suspicious fires in Hackett overnight (November 9).
About 12.30am, police attended MacKenzie Street, Hackett in response to a report of a vehicle fire. Upon arrival police observed a blue Mercedes sedan in the driveway of a residence which was well alight. ACT Fire Brigade was in attendance and extinguished the fire.
About 1am, police were called to a vehicle fire in Stanley Street, Hackett. On arrival police saw a red Suburu Impreza parked on the nature strip which was well alight. ACT Fire Brigade arrived shortly after and extinguished the fire.
About 1.40pm, police were notified of a fire at the Blue Gum Community School, Maitland Street, Hackett. The fire appears to have started in the corner of a veranda area, spreading to the roof cavity damaging two exterior doors, the kitchenette area and one classroom. The damage is estimated to be between $30,000 and $50,000.
Initial assessment by police and fire investigators deemed the fires as suspicious.
