1. White utility scarpers from Greenway bingle:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a three vehicle collision in Greenway last night (February 10).

The collision occurred about 8.30pm outside the Southern Cross Club basketball centre on Cowlishaw Street.

A red Ford Laser, a purple Honda Civic and a white 4×4 tray back utility were involved in the incident, with the white utility leaving the scene prior to police arrival. The utility driver is yet to be identified.

A 35-year-old female motorist suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision, and was treated at the scene by the ACT Ambulance Service before attending The Canberra Hospital.

2. Gunpoint mugging in Lyneham:

ACT Policing is investigating an aggravated robbery which occurred in Lyneham last night (February 10).

About 10.00pm (February 10) a 46-year-old man was confronted by a male offender with a hand gun in the car park of a unit complex in Goodchild Street.

The offender demanded a money bag from the victim – a taxi driver who had just ceased his shift for the evening. The offender then fled the scene with the bag, running into bushland on the opposite side of the road.

The offender is described as about 180cm (5’11”) tall, thin build, wearing black clothing and a black balaclava with only the eyes showing.

General duties and Specialist Response and Security (SRS) Dog Team officers conducted a search of the area and AFP Forensic Services attended the scene.

3. Once again we’re all a great disappointment:

ACT Policing detected 67 motorists driving over the speed limit in a blitz on several main arterial roads around Canberra this morning (February 11).

The offending motorists were detected between 5.00am and 7.00am (February 11) on Ginninderra Drive in Bruce, the Monaro Highway in Hume, Parkes Way in Acton and the Glenloch Interchange in Yarralumla.

One driver was detected travelling at 47 kilometres over the posted speed limit, doing 107km/h in a 60km/h zone. He now faces a fine of over $1600 and the loss of six demerit points.

Acting Superintendent Traffic Operations Peter Davis said despite recent warnings from police, early morning drivers appear not to be listening.

“There seems to be a belief amongst drivers out there that police will not be actively targeting traffic offences before dawn. These drivers need to be aware that police intend to continue these early morning operations until a significant reduction in speed is achieved.”

“Dawn and dusk are the most prevalent times for vehicles to collide with kangaroos on our roads, and excessive speed in such a situation significantly adds to the risk of injury or even death to the driver and passengers,” A/Supt Davis said.

“The ACT remains the only fatality free state or territory in Australia this year and our aim of nine or less fatalities in 09 is achievable, but motorists must drive to the speed limit. Speed limits are there to help ensure the safety of those who use Canberra’s roads, and police are targeting those motorists who drive with a blatant disregard for other people’s safety,” he said.

This has already been the subject of intense debate elsewhere.

I came across this press release from Pastor Danny Nalliah of “Catchthefire” ministries:
http://catchthefire.com.au/blog/2009/02/10/media-release-abortion-laws-to-blame-for-bush-fires/
Pastor Danny is the guy who would replace Senator Fielding in the Senate. In the above media release he claims that abortion law reform in Victoria is to blame for the Victorian Bushfires. If the police are looking for asonists, they should follow up on the comments made by some of his supporters included in the media release page.
I find these comments deeply offensive and invite Senator Fielding (a part of Catchthefire Ministries) to repudiate the statement made by Pastor Nalliah.

Great, sounds like some idiot in the Lyneham area has got hold of a gun.
