1. Why it pays to keep a baseball bat by the door:
- ACT Policing is seeking to identify two males who attempted to steal a vehicle from a residence in Phillip, were disturbed by the owner, and then assaulted the owner before fleeing the location.
Around 3am today at a home in Phillip, a 30-year-old male disturbed two males whom he suspected had been attempted to break into his vehicle.
The two intruders fled to the roadway where three vehicles – a white Hyundai Excel, a VN Holden Commodore and a silver Subaru Liberty, were waiting with their engines running.
The residence chased one intruder to the driver’s side of the Hyundai and kicked the car door shut. He then grappled with the intruder. Males then left the two other vehicles and began punching the resident. The victim suffered a cut lip, bruises and a minor laceration to his lower back.
The offenders returned to their cars and drove off in the direction of Hindmarsh Drive. Around 30 minutes later, the Hyundai was involved in a single vehicle collision on Inkster Street, in Kambah, and abandoned. Around 4am, the Subaru was also involved in a single vehicle collision on Gaunson Cres, in Wanniassa, and abandoned. Both vehicles had been stolen from Kambah the preceding day.
Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen these suspicious persons or vehicles in the Phillip area early today, or anyone suspicious activity around the location of the collisions to contact Crime Stoppers.

2. PCYC film night:
- ACT Policing will host a multicultural film screening night at the National Film and Sound Archive tonight (August 12) to showcase the film-making skills of some of our culturally diverse community members.
The screening night is the culmination of two film making workshops facilitated by the ACT Policing Crime Prevention team, in conjunction with the Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC). The workshops were funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, who granted the money to the PCYC for an arts program of their choice.
ACT Policing’s Youth Liaison Officer Constable Adrian Muscat says the PCYC came up with the idea of the film workshops to help members of the culturally and linguistically diverse community to publicly display their diversity.
“The aim of the workshops was to provide the participants with a chance to share their stories and turn them in to film. The films explore our multicultural community and showcase the diversity of our community on the big screen,” Constable Muscat said.
The first of the two workshops involved 16 participants working together to make a short film with the help of professional instructors, whilst the second workshop involved 12 participants making two short films.
Along with participants and their family and friends, a number of Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) representatives will be present at the screening. A host of sponsors will also be in attendance.

3. ADFA assault:
- ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an assault on a female officer cadet within the grounds of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Campbell on Sunday evening (August 9) between the hours of 7.30pm and 8.15pm.
The woman is resident at ADFA.
The victim had been walking between accommodation blocks when she was assaulted by an unknown offender and lost consciousness for a short time.
She was found by a fellow officer cadet, and had suffered cuts and bruising to her head and body.
Police conducted a doorknock of residents in the surrounding accommodation blocks and have seized several items as evidence.
Police are appealing for anyone within the Campbell area who may have seen any suspicious persons or activity, particularly around the ADFA accommodation blocks, between 7pm and 8.30pm on Sunday night to contact Crime Stoppers.
