ACT Policing were made aware of another fire a short time later at the Richardson Childcare Education Centre, Richardson. ACT Policing offers and the ACT Fire Brigade discovered that a chicken coop at the back of the school, a rubbish hopper in a nearby car park and a kitchen inside the Education Centre were alight.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the vicinity of the school or childcare centre in the early hours of this morning (April 10) to contact Crime Stoppers

2. Mad bad and on the run

A 45-year-old Holt man wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning after he attempted to flee from police yesterday afternoon (Sunday, April 11).

Police were conducting laser speed detection duties on Southern Cross Drive in Scullin yesterday around 4.40pm when they witnessed an approaching Falcon sedan make a U-turn over the median strip and drive in the opposite direction.

Activating warning lights and siren, police initiated a pursuit of the vehicle through Florey. A short time later the vehicle came to a stop and the driver surrendered to police.

Also riding in the Falcon sedan at the time of the man’s arrest was a woman passenger in the front seat and two young children in the rear seat.

The vehicle had been unregistered and without compulsory third party insurance since January 2009. The driver has been unlicensed since March 2001.

The man has been charged with multiple traffic offences including failing to obey a police direction, furious/reckless/dangerous driving, and driving an unregistered/uninsured vehicle.

3. Pssst, Wanna buy a discus?

ACT Policing is investigating the theft of specialist sporting equipment from Bruce which occurred sometime between 5.30pm on Saturday (April 10) and 10.30am on Sunday (April 11).

Around 1.45pm (April 11) police attended the Australian Institute of Sport following the report of the theft of discus equipment from an athlete’s track and field training area. The 27-year-old owner of the equipment is a current Australian Summer Commonwealth Games and Olympic team member and he requires the equipment for an up-coming track and field competition.

The equipment is stored in a locked aluminium storage box which was also taken. The box is approximately 3’ x 2’ x 3’ (91cm x 61cm x 91cm) in size and weighs around 40kgs.

Police believe the equipment would not be of value to anyone else except an athlete with a specialist discipline.

Patrons travelling to or from the rugby match at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night may have seen suspicious persons or behaviour at the adjoining training venue. Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the theft of the box or anyone who knows the whereabouts of the equipment to contact Crime Stoppers

You can always tell when it’s school holidays, it takes a 11 hours for kids to go and light fires at the local schools.
