1. Operation School Safe rumbles on:
- ACT Policing is continuing to seek the assistance of the community to prevent criminal damage to schools as Operation School Safe enters its second week.
Operation School Safe began on July 3, with ACT Policing logging 69 proactive patrols in the first week.
Among the first week of results, two 14-year-old boys were removed from the roof of the Calwell Primary School on Sunday (July 12) and conveyed to the Tuggeranong Police Station as proactive patrolling of schools continues during the holiday period. There was no damage to school property by the trespassers and the youths were released into parental care.
Last week (Thursday, July 9) police on foot patrol at Urambi Primary School in Griffith apprehended two youths suspected of using paint pens to make graffiti on school property. Both will be summonsed for property damage offences.
There were two burglaries at schools throughout Canberra during the first week of Operation School Safe, and a further three cases of property damage. This compares with 10 school burglaries and eight cases of property damage at schools during the 2009 Easter school holiday period.
ACT Policing’s Acting South District Superintendent Rod Anderson said that community vigilance and the willingness of members of the public to report suspicious persons or activity acts a significant enhancement to police patrols around schools during the holiday period when these properties are more vulnerable to burglary or damage.
“People who live near a school and are willing to assist police in preventing this crime can call for police attendance on 131-44 when they see it happen, or report it to Crime Stoppers.
