1. Thuggies come to Civic:

ACT Legislative Assembly car park Friday, July 17, 2009 in which two males were assaulted and had cash and mobile phones stolen.

ACT Policing Beats Team responded to the incident, in which it had been reported that the two males were assaulted by a group of five males. An 18-year-old man from Red Hill received a possible jaw fracture while another 18-year-old man from Downer received soft tissue issues to his face.

Police had stopped and questioned five male youths as persons of interest for suspicious behaviour earlier in the evening and suspect the same group may have been involved in the aggravated robbery.

    Enquiries are continuing.

Police would urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity or behaviour in Civic, particularly around the Legislative Assembly car park on London Circuit, in the early hours of this morning, possibly involving a group of five male youths, should contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.

Also, what kids today need is a damn good war.

Honestly, this whole ‘the kids today are worse than we were in our day blah blah blah’ is such a load of complete bollocks.

The greatest surge in recorded violent crime in Australia occurred in the 1970s (see David Indermur’s paper “Violent crime in Australia: interpreting the trends”). From 1973 to 1993, assault (violent, not sexual) per 100,000 of the population rose from 20 to 120, a 500% increase. The subsequent rise in assault crimes has been insignificant. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology figures there were around 144,000 assaults in 1997, and around 176,000 in 2007 — most of that 20% rise accounted for by population increase.

The kind of ranting about ‘the lazy youth of today’ by DJ and others here sounds exactly like the way that previous generations have bleated about how ‘the youth are running wild’. The Ancient Romans did it, the Ancient Egyptians did it, and now some dufus on an internet forum is utterly convinced that “kids today have no respect for themselves or anything else.”

When you’re a little older and finished school, you will have learnt the word ‘sarcasm’, even if just for a spelling test.

The old ‘but someone else did it’ is sloppy thinking. Didn’t your mother teach you that two wrongs don’t make a right?

Don’t take it to heart.

Yep! That’ll do pig, That’ll do.

Pig? Maybe your 16 year old son made a remark like that when they took his wallet.

A misunderstanding, this was a quote from the movie “Babe” said to the much loved pig meaning “well done, very clever!” Thought it had been used in enough other mediums that most people would get the reference. I was saying that your comment was very clever and funny! Sorry if my meaning was not clear but seeing as it has been sent up endlessley – I assumed it had passed into popular culture.

Can I be clear, I thought your message was a funny response to a serious post. However, your respose:
Pig? Maybe your 16 year old son made a remark like that when they took his wallet.

was pretty freakin’ low.

I think it must be demoralising to work in a profession where you see the worst of human nature all the time. You certainly have my respect, DJ, although I believe that there are many wonderful kids in this generation, some brilliant young minds and inspiring leaders waiting in the wings.

I think most people are ruder and more selfish than we used to be as social values have changed, but I do think there is starting to be a kind of counter-cultural revolution as a backlash against this. I think many are finding our consumerist ‘me-first’ culture to be hollow and deeply unsatisfying, and starting to arc up a little inside.

Btw, old man…would hard work and character building include not getting a pension? Kids today won’t be…

And this is some way excuses the idiotic behaviour we see from many youths? Besides, future govts will change the rules around super to help support those who were too busy traveling, partying and generally jerking off until about age 35 when they retire. Something the previous generation didn;t do as much of.

Old versus young. Bring it on, I say!

Who needs a txt speaking wanker when I have JB ‘the anti-establishment’ man calling me completely ignorant? Should you be throwing stones? I’ve been old for some time but you don’t come across as the kind of character to display even a little respect for anybody older. I don’t think you should respect me in any way but if you want some for your thoughts it does go both ways.

So, you think that there is no lesson to be learnt from history or from those around you and their observations? How very open minded of you.

As for your point regarding the actions of kids since Cook sailed in – in those days some of your opinions you post here you would have seen you lashed and I would have been happy to swing the whip but alas we have moved on.

Dear God, DJ, dear god…

It’s ironic how, since the rise of the Generation With Rights, we seem to be going back to the law of the jungle.

Yeah it’s great, bagged me a lion last night walking back from the pub!

But I see your point ant, when those pesky barons got these new-fangled individual rights proclaimed back in 1215 at Runnymede they obviously knew that it would just be eight short centuries before their dastardly plan came to fruition in the anarchy and destruction that is the mean streets of Canberra.

DJ can you pinpoint the exact moment you turned into an old man or did it happen gradually?

These particular kids on the other hand are vicious scum. I hope they get caught, and I hope they get locked up.

My hope is that they try it on with someone who kicks their arses from here to next June.

Oh and JB, if you expect people here not to call names or make personal remarks, some example setting would be good.

Maybe we should import thugs. We’ve tried it with cane toads. *chuckle*

Pish! How Soft! Try growing up in the East End. My dad’s family knew both the Kray’s and Cornell who, nut for a modicum of good taste on the part of my aunt, could have ended up as my uncle. The pack of so called thug’s getting around here would crap themselves in the company of some of these folk…

Gosh DJ.

I knew you liked me, but sado-erotic fantasies? That’s very special.

You’d need to at least buy me dinner and, frankly, improve your line of sweet talk significantly.

But hey, lift your game and you never know your luck in the big city.

Who needs a txt speaking wanker when I have JB ‘the anti-establishment’ man calling me completely ignorant? Should you be throwing stones? DJ can you pinpoint the exact moment you turned into an old man or did it happen gradually?

A minority of Australian youth have been badly behaved since the first fleet arrived and the first whinge about the “kids today” oddly enough was included in the earliest written records.

I mean seriously, is it that you’re completely ignorant? Or you just enjoy being part of millennia old repetition (which by its ancient nature disproves its point)?

These particular kids on the other hand are vicious scum. I hope they get caught, and I hope they get locked up.

No piss taking should happen. It keeps happening because kids today have no respect for themselves or anything else. Work hard to achieve or earn something you can take pride in? Sounds like hard work and character building… not something the new generation seems capable of.

Now some txt speaking wanker will no doubt take the piss….

Everytime I read one of these thug bash reports I feel sick. As some of you know from earlier posts my 16 year old son was victim to one of these “wallet and mobile or we will kill you” attacks. He received severe facial injuries including breaks, fractures and eye damage. Note- he handed both wallet and mobile over immediatley but it made no difference.

In his case it was 5 against 1- there are enough similarities here between his case and this one for me to call the Officer in charge and see if there is any similarity between the AFP sketches.

How can this keep happening? Please note this is not a post against the AFP esp Woden, who were fantastic- just a cry to the heavens. What kind of person could gang up on a couple of 18 year old boys and do such a thing and still sleep at night. My thoughts are with the boys and their parents and the long road ahead to recover from this.

Rant over- feel free to take the piss, it might lighten the mood.
