1. To catch a thief in Red Hill:

ACT Policing has arrested a 32-year-old man after a report was received by police of a burglary at a Red Hill residential address around 9.09am today (June 17).

The victim returned home around 9am to find an unknown male in his house. The surprised home owner chased the alleged offender from the premises and over a fence. The male is alleged to have then threatened the victim with a knife in order to get away. The victim immediately contacted police.

From the detailed description provided by the victim, police were able to locate the male in a nearby street.

The alleged offender from Red Hill will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (June 18), charged with possession of a weapon with intent, burglary and theft.

2. Motorists busted on the cycle path:

Specific locations in Canberra were targeted today (Tuesday, June 16) by ACT Policing’s Traffic Operations team and Road Traffic Authority vehicle inspectors, resulting in the issuing of 128 Traffic Infringement Notices and 27 vehicle defect notices.

A total of 329 vehicles were inspected during the targeted operation.

From around 8am today, police focussed primarily on errant driver behaviour at selected locations around Canberra including school zones in Deakin, Hackett, and Red Hill; speed restrictions at roadworks in Kaleen; and drivers disobeying road signs on Capital Hill, in Lyneham and in Conder. Police also focussed their attention on motorists illegally using the bicycle lane on Canberra Avenue near the NSW border.

Of the 27 vehicles issued with defect notices, two were deemed by vehicle inspectors to be in such poor condition that they were dangerous and had to be towed away. One vehicle had no brakes and the other had the steel belts showing on its bald tyres.

Eight drivers were summonsed for various matters and one was arrested for a high range drink-driving offence.

Police will continue with their targeted traffic operations at undisclosed locations around Canberra over the next two days.

They should sit on Parkes Way after the Glenloch Interchange and book all the idiot motorcyclists who think the emergency/bike lane is their personal road.

Why?

Why not !!

It amazes me that the ACT Police make a song and dance just because they are doing what they are paid to do 24/7. Why will they stop after another two days?

They just can’t win can they !!!

Either they don’t say anything and they get accused of “keeping news from the community” or “they aren’t doing anything”

When they do announce what they are doing, they get accused of show boating and alike. What exactly do you want ??

The purpose of (in my opinion) of releasing the news is to 1. Inform the community of what ACT Policing is doing (a small aspect) and 2. Community service message – warning police are targeting this.

I wish they’d fine morons for sitting in the right lane.. Canberrans don’t seem to understand the concept of overtaking!

You get busted bigred 🙂

How pi##ed would you be to get caught for something you had been doing for years like driving on bald tyres or usng the bike lane as a short cut?

You’re easily amazed then. They don’t have the numbers to run this type of targeted operation every day.

I was delighted to see the moron who almost cleaned me up get pulled over further on. made my day.

Terminology. There are no cycle paths in Canberra.

Strictly speaking we DO have cycle paths according to the ACT Road Rules Handbook; The definition is useful to distinguish the wider black stuff from the skinnier white stuff which are both shared paths. 😉

Terminology. There are no cycle paths in Canberra. We have shared paths and cycle lanes.
I also wonder if the offending motorists were in fact motorcyclists.

motorists on the cycle path?…..not exactly…..geez you can be a tool sometimes johnboy….

They would have had fun in Qbn this arvo. The council decided to do some LONG overdue road-resurfacing on Morrisett St where it goes past the old Marco Polo club (now Brindabella doctor haunt). So they had traffic backing up to Bungendore Rd and back to the Red Rooter, back up to Lowe St and locking up the intersections of Crawford and spilling over to Monaro, oh boy their traffic “management” guys really excelled themselves. People were doing angry wheel-screeching u-turns, going up kerbs and footpaths, queuing through traffic lights and roundabouts… it was a mess. I left Qbn after dark, and the line-up was past Spotlight.
