Twenty-one new ACT Policing officers were officially sworn in as Constables of Police at the Australian Federal Police (AFP) College in Barton today.
Chief Police Officer for ACT Roman Quaedvlieg joined AFP Commissioner Tony Negus in welcoming the new officers into ACT Policing.
“Recruits face many challenges, mentally and physically, during the course and it is a testament to their hard work and determination they have successfully completed the 24 week course,” CPO Quaedvlieg said.
During the course of the 24 weeks one recruit became a father and another married while Constable Laura Johnson received that AFP’s highest recorded female result in the fitness ‘beep test’ scoring 12.1.
Constable Matthew Yeend was awarded the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence in Recruit Training for his demonstrated excellence in all elements of the program, including teamwork, leadership, communication, academic achievement, health and safety and commitment to the values of the AFP.
For the first time recruits undertook practical experience as part of the 24 week recruit course by assisting ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention team at the Canberra Show and completing two days of work placement with ACT Policing.
Today’s attestation ceremony is the first of six for 2010.
The ACT’s newest officers comprise 11 men and 10 women which bring with them skills from previous employment including protective services, teaching and the Navy. Four of the new recruits have strong family connections, with family members also working within ACT Policing and the AFP.
The new officers will be deployed to stations within ACT Policing after completing a two week rotation with Traffic Operations.
