1. Signs the copper price is on the rise:

    $90,000 of copper wire stolen

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to the burglary of a building site and the subsequent theft of copper wire which occurred in Phillip overnight (April 21 to 22).

Police were called to the corner of Furzer and Worgan Street around 8.20am today (April 22) following the incident which occurred sometime between 6pm and 6am.

The offenders entered the premises via Furzer Street and used a forklift from the site to remove 23 drums of copper wire. The wire on the drums varies in size and length but each drum is understood to weigh between 200 and 500 kilograms.

The copper wire is valued at over $90,000.

Police believe a semi trailer or another type of large vehicle may have been used to conduct the theft and that the offenders were at the location for an extensive period of time. One bottle of gas for the forklift was completely used during the theft and the offenders replaced it with a fresh one located within the building site.

AFP Forensic Services attended the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses, particularly those patrons attending the Woden Tradies Club last night, who may have seen suspicious activity near the corner of Furzer and Worgan Street, Phillip, to contact Crime Stoppers.

2. Remand centre argy bargy:

A 33-year-old man will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today following a police investigation into an incident involving a number of prisoners and officers at the Belconnen Remand Centre on January 5 this year.

The man was summonsed to appear in court in relation to three counts of common assault and three counts of resist territory public official.

Further summonses will be issued in relation to the incident.

3. Rebels Raided:

ACT Policing has this morning arrested three men with links to the Rebels motorcycle gang as part of an operation targeting illegal activity.

About 6am, officers from the Territory Investigations Group (TIG) and Specialist Response and Security executed search warrants at residences in Chisholm, Belconnen and Turner. Subsequent searches of the homes uncovered quantities of steroids, substances suspected of being cocaine and methylamphetamines, cannabis, shotgun ammunition, restricted knives and cash.

Police are currently executing subsequent warrants at addresses in Lyneham and Dunlop.

The three men arrested this morning are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

    Investigations are continuing.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online

“re: the argy bargy

“resist territory public official”, now thats a new one.

No it isn’t.”

Sorry Constable Tooks, I guess I should have said, “that’s a new one to me”

What constitutes a ‘territory public official’ anyway? Does it mean that a parking inspectors partner can’t resist his/her romantic advances?

What’s the colour of ninety k worth of wire? Copper, copper.

What if it was stolen by people who are in the industry? Not just those who work on the jobsite, but those who can dispose of that quantity of metal without raising questions.

It seems pretty organised, I suspect the copper is melted down and a long way from here now

And look, no need for extra laws!

Sounds like commie terrorist bikie talk to me. Perhaps you’ve forgotten how scared you’re meant to be? Do we need to run some more alarmist stories to remind you?

I thought the BRC was supposed to be closed down once the Alexander Maconochie Centre opened.

“an operation targetting illegal activity” – good to hear they’re not targetting legal activity, I suppose.
