1. Baseball bat muggers lurking around ANU:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an attempted aggravated robbery which occurred on Barry Drive, Acton early yesterday (April 23).

Around 12.45am a 22-year-old man was walking along Barry Drive near Sullivan’s Creek towards the Australian National University when he notices two male youths run into bushes near the university soccer fields.

As the victim walked near the bushes one of the youths jumped out holding a baseball bat demanding his property. A brief fight broke out. The victim managed to escape towards Bruce Hall but was first struck on the leg with the baseball bat. During the fight the second offender emerged from the bushes. The victim was not injured during the incident and none of his property was stolen. He later attended City Police Station to report the incident.

The first offender is described as being approximately 165cms (5’5”) tall and wearing a dark-coloured hooded jumper, dark-blue jeans and a balaclava.

The second male offender is described as being approximately 160cm (5’3”) tall and was wearing a light-coloured hooded jumper, light jeans and a balaclava.

Police would urge anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of Barry Drive in Acton overnight or who knows the identity of the offenders to contact Crime Stoppers

2. What a pity her wasn’t going faster:

ACT Policing arrested a 32-year-old Wanniassa man after he crashed a motorcycle in the car park of the Tuggeranong Hyperdome yesterday afternoon (Thursday, April 22).

Police patrolling in the area around 4.30pm identified the black Honda motorcycle and its registration details as linked to a number of traffic offences, including 12 speed camera infringements, one of which exceeded 200km/h. Police later identified the Honda as an orange 1100cc machine which had been stolen from Weston in 2009. It had been crudely repainted black and stolen number plates fitted.

Officers approached the 32-year-old rider on the motorcycle and attempted to apprehend him. The rider revved the machine and accelerated away in an effort to escape, but hit a kerb and crashed. The man was unhurt and placed under arrest.

He will face multiple traffic charges including furious/reckless/dangerous driving, ride/drive a stolen vehicle, and driving without a licence. The offender’s licence expired in December 2007. He will also face changes in relation to a First Instance Warrant and breach of bail conditions.

As a result of information received, a search warrant was conducted on a Phillip residence connected with the male. A volume of stolen property was seized from that residence, resulting in the man also facing multiple counts of possession of stolen property.

The alleged offender was held in the ACT Watch House overnight and will appear in ACT Magistrates Court today.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

He was walking alone in the dead of night and sees two people suspiciously run into some bushes then keeps walking past those bushes? Not very street smart. People in bushes at 12.45AM are usually up to no good.

Our motorcycle rider could be nominated for the annual ‘Mully’ Williams memorial award.

Number 1 reaffirms the belief that all hoodies should be banned. And maybe baseball bats.
