1. Ainslie armed robbery:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an armed robbery at the IGA supermarket in Ainslie early today (Friday July 23).

Around 12.20am three males approached an employee after closing and threatened him with a knife, forcing him to re-open the store. The offenders stole an amount of cash and cigarettes and left the store on foot. No persons were injured during the incident.

One of the offenders is described as having a Caucasian appearance, about 170 centimetres tall (5’7”), aged in his mid twenties.

The second offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his mid twenties and around 180 – 185 centimetres tall (5’11”).

The third offender is described as having a Caucasian appearance, aged in his late teens to early twenties, 185 – 190 centimetres tall (6’2”), with a skinny build.

Police would urge anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the Ainslie area at the time of the offence, or who knows the identity of the offenders to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information to Crime Stoppers can be provided anonymously.

2. May as well get “born to lose” tattooed to his forehead:

At approximately 12.20am Thursday, July 22, ACT Policing stopped a 21-year-old Canberra man in his vehicle on Emu Bank, Belconnen for the purpose of a random breath test. The breath analysis resulted in a reading of 0.161.

At 2.55am, within two hours of being released from police custody, the male was again apprehended by police on College Street, Belconnen, driving the same motor vehicle.

The male was arrested and underwent a further breath analysis, which resulted in a reading of 0.133.

The 21-year-old was conveyed by police to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with two counts of drink driving.

The male was bailed from the ACT Watch House and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday July 30.

3. Quality stink in Tuggers:

ACT Policing took two people into custody and later charged one for common assault and property damage after an altercation outside the Tuggeranong Valley Leagues Club last night (Friday, July 23).

Police were called to the location around 10.20pm, responding to reports of a disturbance outside the premises.

A large glass panel in front of the club was broken and several people appeared to have minor injuries as a result of an earlier altercation.

A 19-year-old male was arrested in a carpark nearby and conveyed to the ACT Watch House, where he was charged with common assault and property damage.

A second man, also 19 years old, was taken into protective custody for being intoxicated and disorderly and was held overnight in the ACT Watch House.

4. Overtaking police cars while allegedly drunk is poor move:

ACT Policing arrested a 21-year-old Torrens man after he overtook a police car in Curtin early this morning at high speed, then later returned a high-range reading for the presence of alcohol.

Police conducting a patrol in an unmarked car on Yarra Glen in Curtin around 12.32am today observed a green Ford Falcon with Victorian registration plates overtake them at high speed.

Police estimated the offender’s speed at 164km/h, then observed the driver momentarily lose control while overtaking another vehicle on Yarra Glen.

The offender was stopped by police and subjected to a roadside screening test for alcohol, which returned a positive result. A later sample returned a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.187.

The driver, who holds a New Zealand licence, was also found to be driving an unregistered vehicle with no compulsory third party (CTP) insurance.

He will be bailed from the ACT Watch House later today to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (July 27) charged with various traffic offences, including drink-driving and furious/reckless/dangerous driving.

5. Raped in broad daylight in the very heart of Civic:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a sex assault on an 18-year-old woman in parkland on City Hill yesterday afternoon.

The woman had been walking through the parkland of City Hill from the western side of Vernon Circle around 3.15pm yesterday (Friday, July 23) when she was approached from behind and grabbed by the face and shoulders.

The offender pushed her against a tree and assaulted her. He then ran off in the direction of Constitution Avenue, and was heard to yell at the victim as he left the location.

The offender is described as aged in his late 20s or early 30s, having light brown hair in a crew cut, a large nose, short fingernails, a silver ear ring in his right ear, was wearing a navy polar fleece jumper with a front zip, and blue jeans.

The victim immediately attended City Police Station and reported the incident. Police conducted a search of the area and enquiries into the matter are continuing today.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen a man answering to this description who was acting suspiciously in the area of City Hill or Constitution Avenue yesterday afternoon to contact Crime Stoppers.

@point number 2

Remember an old Michael Leunig cartoon from years ago…..character walking out of a tattoo parlour with “Born Looser” tattooed across his chest…makes me chuckle every time

That the City Hill incident took place in broad daylight, on a workday essentially in the middle of the city is especially concerning. I often take that shortcut, and it can be pretty seccluded with some dodgy types (yes, some with sizeable noses) hanging around in between the trees.

Given I also work on Constitution Ave, I’ll be on the lookout for men with crew cuts and big noses. If you sport a crew cut — watch out.

“rude bits”?

What are they exactly? Because unwanted “kissing” is classified as sexual assault, including:

Sexual assault can take various forms, some of which are criminal offences:

•touching, fondling, kissing

•being made to look at, or pose for, pornographic photos

•voyeurism

•exhibitionism

•sexual harassment

•verbal harassment/innuendo

•rape

•incest/intrafamilial child sexual assault

•stalking

What rape?
The report mentions sexual assault. This doesn’t necessarily mean rape.
e.g Grabbing someones rude bits is sexual assault, but not rape.
I do agree though it is much more serious… poor girl.

The rape should go at the top of the list. It’s much worse crime than drink driving and speeding.

Not to beat on a drum, but if this car doing patrols, was a marked police vehicle, Im pretty sure this whole event wouldnt have happened.

Of course! Had the police car been done up in police livery instead of unmarked, the driver would’ve immediately become sensible and stopped driving at more than twice the speed limit, ceased to be intoxicated at over three times the legal blood alcohol limit and the car would’ve re-registered and insured itself by some kind of magical process.

And what fine/speeding ticket or ‘monetary reward’ are you talking about? He was (quite rightly) arrested. If you’re trying to pull the tired, old, and cliched ‘revenue raising’ card in this case, you’re going to look a wee bit silly.

Why you constantly put your embarrassing ignorance of policing on display is beyond my understanding.

+1000. Mind-boggling stupidity.

164 km/h – now that’s what I call speeding, not 83 in an 80 zone. Fortunately there was a real policeman around to apprehend him – all a speed camera would have done was send a fine out in the mail, which would have been small comfort to the people he might have killed had he not been caught.

I guess a fine and a speeding ticket justifies it though, after all a marked car would have made the situation safer, but not brought in any monetary reward.

What are you talking about? What speeding ticket? He didn’t get a speeding ticket.

You’re right, if it was a marked police car, the drink driver probably wouldn’t have overtaken them. In fact, he probably would’ve stayed well behind them and managed to keep driving with a BAC of 0.187, only to accelerate again once police were out of sight. That would’ve been a great result, wouldn’t it? Unless, of course, he managed to cause a fatal prang on the way.

Why you constantly put your embarrassing ignorance of policing on display is beyond my understanding.
