1. Kaleen Scout Hall torched:

ACT Policing is investigating a suspicious fire which occurred at the Kaleen Scout Hall early this morning (November 24).

About 2.14am ACT Fire Brigade and police were called to a report of a fire at the Scout Hall on Maribyrnong Avenue. The fire was extinguished and appears to have been deliberately lit.

No injuries were sustained as a result of the fire and police are conducting an investigation into the cause.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnesses suspicious behaviour or people around the area of the Scout Hall during the early hours of November 24 to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

2. She must have been really desperate to get home:

A 29-year-old female unaccompanied learner driver from Scarborough, Queensland was arrested in the early hours this morning (November 24) with a blood alcohol reading 13 times over the limit.

About 3.30am police were notified of a vehicle being driven dangerously in the vicinity of Hardwick Crescent, Holt. General Duties members from Belconnen conducted a search of the area and located the vehicle travelling along Southern Cross Drive. The vehicle was weaving from side to side.

Police conducted a traffic stop and the driver was subjected to a roadside screening test which returned a positive result. She was conveyed to Belconnen Police Station where she returned a breathalyser reading of 0.266 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. As the driver holds a learner licence, she is subject to Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.02.

Superintendent of Traffic Operations Mark Colbran said that the recent driving results continue to demonstrate that some people in the community continue to ignore the law and do not care about the possible tragic consequences of their actions.

“This apprehension of another dangerous high range drink driver was greatly assisted by a member of the public phoning police to report the vehicle, including the registration and a detailed description,” Supt Colbran said.

“ACT Policing relies on information from members of the public, and I would encourage everyone to call Police Operations on 131 444 if they observe or believe that someone is drink driving. Police rely on this public support to help keep our roads safe”

The woman driver was arrested and conveyed to the ACT Watch House. She will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

ACT Policing will continue to target drink drivers across the ACT during November and December.

3. Quick work on a card thief:

ACT Policing apprehended a 38-year-old Ngunnawal woman on charges of obtaining financial advantage by deception, theft, burglary and trespass after she was found in possession of stolen credit cards and identity documents in Mitchell yesterday.

Police will allege that the woman unlawfully entered Campbell Primary School earlier around 11am yesterday (Tuesday, November 23) and stole a wallet and documents belonging to a teacher.

She was challenged by a teacher’s assistant at the school, and was seen running from the building to a black Nissan dual-cab utility.

A short time later, the woman allegedly used a stolen credit card to purchase goods from a supermarket in Mitchell. About 11 minutes later, acting on information received, police then performed a traffic stop on the woman’s vehicle in Essington Street, Mitchell.

More stolen credit cards and documentation were found in and around the woman’s vehicle.

She was taken to the ACT Watch House, whereupon she was later bailed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on November 30.

Thanks for your concern about my wellbeing fgzk.

I did the “blood in mouth/nose/eyes/everywhere” thing in 1985. I didn’t like it, decided not to do it again, and so far I’ve been lucky. This partially explains my dislike of sharing the roads with drunks, fools and the inept.

You, on the other hand, seem quite enamoured of the D, F and I. I find this baffling, but to each his own.

I bet the PR hacks are going to hate it when the 0.00 limit comes in for provisional and learner drivers.

If in fact she has caused no injury or damage of any sort, why is she clogging up the court system when there are so many remandees waiting for their matters to be dealt with?

You cannot be serious ……

Cannot possibly be serious.

Let’s cut to the chase: most Canberrans are serial speeders. How else do you explain that Adelaide Avenue travels at 90-95km/h when the cops and speed vans aren’t there, and 75-80km/h when they are? The Monaro Hwy travels a consistent 10-15km/h over the limit when the cops or speed vans aren’t there, especially down the airport end. People drive at a speed they feel comfortable at, unless there’s a reason not to.

I’m not excusing it, rather trying to explain it.

Everyone,

I am a serial speeder, always have been and I travel massive amounts of kms and I have not had a speeding ticket in about 10 years, maybe longer!

It’s all about being as cunning, or moreso, than the speed camera operators and Gummint.

If you wised up, you would’nt get a ticket and the cash flow would cease and change would occur but as you are a dickhead, you’ll keep getting tickets and the camera’s will stay.

You’re absolutely correct. That’s why, when driving, I frequently take my eyes off the speedo to check the conditions of the road, overtake and watch the road. I’ve discovered that by doing doing this I can avoid crashing all over the place. Just sayin’.

Riot Police also wrote:
“The fact is, the reason for speed cameras is to generate revenue. Discuss.”

No discussion at all required here. Speed cameras generate revenue for the government. They generate revenue from people who choose to exceed the speed limit. The details of this can be argued until hell freezes over. Camera placement, the reasonableness of the speed limit in various places etc etc. But it is what it is. Reality can’t be denied. If you exceed the speed limit, you will end up paying the speeding tax. If you drive at or below the posted speed limit then you won’t.

If someone complained about being pinged when they were actually driving under the posted limit, that would be a much more interesting story.

“About 2.14am ACT Fire Brigade and police were called to a report of a fire at the Scout Hall on Maribyrnong Avenue. The fire was extinguished and appears to have been deliberately lit.”

One of my kids is a scout. He and a bunch of other little boys and girls play together and learn things at their scout activities. They learn how to get along with each other peacefully. They learn how to tie knots, how to sail boats, how to abseil down cliffs and lots of other quite difficult things. Doing these things with his friends is helping him learn how to become a man. He’s helped in this by a bunch of really nice grownups who unhesitatingly give their precious time to the group, and who have my eternal gratitude.

On the other hand, there are evil shits out there who do things like burn down scout halls for their amusement. No doubt they started off by tearing the wings off flies and setting fire to kittens. They are disgusting.

There is a special, and very hot, section of hell reserved for people who harm children, and I have no doubt that burning down their hall will harm those kids from the Kaleen group. They will remember this all their lives.

I’m very sure that whoever did this will end up in the smoking section. In the interim, if someone knows anything, the cops are only a phone call away,

I’ve never been ticketed by a fixed speed camera.”

Onya, Mr Genitals. (Now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d write).

I’ve been driving in Canberra for over 30 years without a speeding ticket, but I’ve been pinged twice in that period in different locations, in dim light after long interstate drives. Can’t believe I didn’t pick up the signs. Can’t believe I made the same mistake twice. As you say, I wasn’t watching carefully enough. I should have stopped driving earlier and I deserved the fines I received.

So, I have my explanations (not excuses) for why I got pinged. Other than that, I can only conclude that Canberra residents who get caught by their friendly local speed camera are simply dim. I congratulate them for their voluntary contribution to government revenue, while at the same time urging them to slow the f*ck down.

Oh wow, let’s all get into another Speed Camera argument. We know how well that will turn out and who will argue which point.

Let’s get to the important point, was the driver Olivia?

I just heard someone torched Diamantina Scout Hall (see, facebook is useful for something).

In addition to the AFP release, I am hearing pretty extensive fire and smoke damage (and probably water from the fireies), and it looks like they will loose most of their stuff.

According to facebook (Geez, isnt it great?) they did loose pretty much everything. 🙁

Such a sad pathetic world we live in, isnt it?

Rubbish. Where did you get this from or did you make it up?

Speed cameras are dangerous and should be banned. Drivers are not driving to the conditions of the road, overtaking safely, or watching the road while they are looking at the speedo. If speeding is a real concern, legislation should be introduced which states that every new car has a GPS based speed limiter (tech available in 1995) making it impossible to speed. Car racing has demonstrated that technology is there to prevent in car injuries by fitting roll cages and wearing head protection. The fact is, the reason for speed cameras is to generate revenue. Discuss.

Speed cameras serve one purpose; to catch people who are speeding in the proximity of the camera. Yes this raises revenue – so what? If you are unable to drive at or under the speed limit without staring at your speedo, you should not be driving.

I’m curious about what’s gonna happen when L and P-plate drivers have a zero alcohol limit – how are they going to report that? Will a driver like this be infinity times over the limit?

Jim Jones said :

I’m a big fan of more marked patrols, simply because my eyes tell me people behave far better when they see marked police cars. The speed cameras I don’t think achieve a lot, but they don’t really bother me either way.

A while ago I suggested we use revenue from speed cameras to support more marked police cars on the road, and got slammed for it.

More marked patrols sure, but why less speed cameras?

Another reason why we need more marked patrols and less speed cameras.
