1. A bad start:
ACT Policing has arrested a 20-year-old man from Dunlop on his second drink-driving charge within the last 12 months.
Around 11pm last night (Thursday September 23) police were on mobile patrol on Southern Cross Drive in Florey when they saw a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction at excessive speed.
Police stopped the vehicle and the driver underwent a roadside screening test which returned a positive result. He was taken to the Belconnen Police Station for a breath analysis.
The driver was found to have a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.107 which is more than five times the 0.02 limit for a probationary licence holder.
He was conveyed to the ACT Watch House and bailed to appear in court on a later date.

For the first time ACT Policing has launched a campaign to specifically recruit community police officers within Canberra – people with attributes that would make great cops.
“We are looking for 100 of the best to be part of our great team. This new way of recruiting for ACT Policing is about targeting people in the community who would make great cops, specifically for community policing roles,” Chief Police Officer Roman Quaedvlieg said.
“This is a rare opportunity for ACT Policing to recruit people from within the community, who have a history, knowledge and understanding about Canberra.”
Nine ACT Policing officers from diverse backgrounds ranging from General Duties to Intelligence are profiled are part of the campaign, providing an insight into a job that is anything but every day.
The campaign puts the challenge out there – “Can you pass a physical fitness test once a year? And a mental fitness test every day of the year?”
“We are looking for people with a diverse range of skills and life experiences. People who are resilient, who are tenacious, have good people skills, empathy, sound judgment and above all, integrity.
“Not everyone is up to the job. Policing can be challenging, and not just in the physical sense. Mentally, you’re challenged everyday, and you will be confronted with some ugly truths. For those of us who do it, we couldn’t imagine doing anything else – the rewards far outweigh the dangers.”
Within ACT Policing there are options to specialise in areas such as crime prevention, search and rescue, special operations, drugs, sexual assault, fraud, rural patrol, traffic, intelligence, crash investigations or emergency/disaster management.
As part of the broader AFP, there is also the opportunity to undertake international deployments, United Nations monitoring and peacekeeping missions, spend time working at Jervis Bay, Christmas Island, Cocos Island or Norfolk Island, or become a Federal Agent working on national and international investigations which is a real advantage for ACT Policing and its members.
People who have previously applied to be considered as part of the broader Australian Federal Police pool will need to apply for these specific community policing roles through police.act.gov.au.
“Police are part of the community, so we’re asking for those in the community who think they’d make a great cop to register online at police.act.gov.au,” CPO Quaedvlieg said.
