1. Watch the schools blaze up:

ACT Policing is investigating a suspicious fire at Orana School in Weston.

Police were called to the location around 3.10am yesterday morning (Sunday 25 July) in response to a report of multiple fires in various locations at the school. A hopper, wheelie bin, a shade cloth fence and one of the school buildings were damaged in the fires. Significant damage was caused to the school building, however most of the damage was restricted to the outside of the building.

The fires were extinguished by the ACT Fire Brigade.

At this stage, the cost of the damage to the school is unknown.

AFP Forensic Services are conducting an examination of the scene.

Two vehicles were seen in the area around the time of the fires and police would like to speak with the occupants of these vehicles. One of the vehicles is described as a silver/grey coloured station wagon with ACT registration and the other vehicle as a silver/grey coloured 4-door sedan or hatchback.

Police are urging anyone who may have any information on the cause of the fire or can provide information in relation to the vehicles to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or provide information via the website www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

2. 21 and as dumb as a sack of hammers:

A 21-year-old male from Higgins was caught exceeding the speed limit by 77km/h about 2.40pm on Saturday afternoon (July 24) on Gungahlin Drive, Palmerston.

Police were conducting traffic duties around 2.30pm when they observed a blue Subaru WRX sedan travelling at high speed. The vehicle was detected to be going 157km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The male driver, the holder of a probationary licence, was stopped by police and unable to provide a lawful excuse for travelling above the posted speed limit, asking the police officer if he would be able to issue a caution for this offence.

The driver will be summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

3. Kaleen blaggers:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an armed robbery at the Caltex service station in Kaleen which occurred around 12:35am this morning (Monday 26 July).

Two males entered the service station, one of whom threatened the male staff member with a tomahawk. One of the offenders jumped over the counter and opened up the till while the other offender, holding a knife, kept watch. The service station attendant locked himself in a store room and was not injured during the incident. The offenders stole an amount of cash and cigarettes.

One of the offenders is described as Caucasian in appearance, in his early 20’s, about 170 centimetres tall (5’7”), with dark coloured hair, shaved on top and sides but longer at the back, and a slim build. He was wearing a blue jumper and blue tracksuit pants with white stripes.

The other offender is described as being about 180 centimetres tall (5’11”) with a slim build. He was wearing blue denim jeans and a grey hooded jumper under a black jacket.

Police would urge anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of Kaleen or who knows the identity of the offenders to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers.

There are plenty of places along Gungahlin drive where there is enough of a gap to set the limit to 100 kph.

And they would be…….?

Keep in mind we are talking about north of Barton Hwy here. I fully expect that once the GDE is upgraded to full dual carriageway it will be 100 between Belco way and the approach to Mitchell, but Gungahlin drive through the suburbs of Gungahlin is no different to Ginninderra drive, Drakeford drive, and Hindmarsh drive.

Bahahahaha! A caution?! Ballsy little man.

“A 21-year-old male from Higgins was caught exceeding the speed limit by 77km/h about 2.40pm on Saturday afternoon (July 24) on Gungahlin Drive, Palmerston.”

“The male driver was unable to provide a lawful excuse for travelling above the posted speed limit, asking the police officer if he would be able to issue a caution for this offence.”

You can’t blame him for asking – this is Canberra after all, where murderers get off scot-free.

And, once again – 157 in an 80 zone – now THAT is speeding. Not 104 in a 100 zone.

I will note however that it is yet another example of a road that for the most part should be 100kph instead of 80.

Like all the other 100kph roads around Australia with traffic lights at most 1.6km apart you mean.

There are plenty of places along Gungahlin drive where there is enough of a gap to set the limit to 100 kph.

If they would just ban tracksuit pants with white stripes this would never happen.

And it will drop to 60km/h as the newer suburbs sprouting around Gungahlin Drive begin to fill up with residents.

Good God, again?? It’s becoming an annual event…

lol, nimrod. Though I am curious, what possible lawful excuse could you give for driving that fast ? I will note however that it is yet another example of a road that for the most part should be 100kph instead of 80.
