1. In case you were wondering about McBryde Crescent police activity:

ACT Policing will be undertaking training in buildings within the grounds of Trinity Christian College tomorrow (June 27).

Residents of Wanniassa may see an increased police presence and loud noises in the McBryde Crescent area between 9am and 5pm.

Residents who may be affected by the training have had notices delivered to their homes.

Anyone who is concerned by the activity is asked to call ACT Policing Operations on 131-444.

[Published this morning]

2. Thuggies arrested:

ACT Policing patrols were flagged down during the early hours of today (June 28) by two 19-year-old victims stating they had been beaten and robbed.

The males stated that after leaving a friends birthday party in Mawson around 12.15am, one of them was approached by two males who demanded money, before assaulting the victim.

The first victim ran off calling for help from his friend who came to his aid. The two victims were then approached by a larger group of men who are alleged to have chased and beaten the victims, stealing items of personal property.

Police located five males in the Mawson area matching the description of the alleged offenders.

Two of these males, an 18-year-old from Chifley and a 19-year-old from Fisher, were arrested and will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (June 29) charged with aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

3. Reid late night home invasion:

ACT Policing have a 40-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth after an incident in the early hours of Saturday (June 27).

Police were called to a residence in Reid after reports of a home invasion and assault were received.

Around 1am a 39-year-old man and his 32-year-old defacto partner contacted police after it is alleged the two men entered their home, assaulting the male and attempting to steal items from the house.

When confronted by a neighbour as they left the premises they allegedly assaulted the male neighbour who is now receiving treatment in hospital for a suspected broken ankle and lacerations.

The alleged offenders then barricaded themselves inside a nearby residence and refused to surrender to police.

The Special Response and Security Tactical and Negotiator Teams attended the scene and peacefully resolved the incident, with the males taken into police custody around 5.30am.

The 40-year-old man from Reid will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (June 29) charged with three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of aggravated burglary.

The 17-year-old male youth will face the ACT Children’s Court tomorrow (June 29) charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of aggravated burglary.

4. Turner bowlo blaggers intercepted:

ACT Policing has arrested two men in relation to an alleged attempted aggravated robbery in Turner yesterday afternoon (June 28).

The two alleged offenders were identified by police travelling in a stolen motor vehicle towards the Canberra North Bowling Club about 6.30pm. Police will allege the men were planning to rob the premises.

Members from the Specialist Response and Security Tactical Response team executed a high-risk vehicle intercept on the alleged stolen vehicle on Bluebell Street. The 31-year-old and 20-year-old male occupants, both from Charnwood, were arrested and conveyed to the Regional Watch House.

Police will also allege a handgun and a carving knife were located at the time of the arrest.

The 20-year-old man has been charged with one count of attempted aggravated robbery and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court later this morning (June 29). The 31-year-old man is expected to be charged with attempted aggravated robbery and theft of a motor vehicle and will front an ACT Magistrate today.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen suspicious persons or activity to contact Crime Stoppers.

5. The great Latham car burglary:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to property damage and theft in Latham early Sunday, June 28 in which 21 vehicles were broken into and in some instances, property stolen during the early hours of the morning.

All the offences occurred between the hours of 2am and 6am on Sunday, and police believe the same male offender is involved.

The offender gained entry to most of the cars by breaking a window. Aside from loose change, few of the cars contained property of value. The most valuable item stolen was an MP3 player.

The offences occurred mainly in the western streets of Latham, in the area bounded by Florey Drive and Southern Cross Drive.

The description provided to police of the offender was of a male in his late teens; Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance; wearing a blue hooded jumper and a grey jacket. In one instance, where the offender was disturbed whilst breaking into a vehicle in O’Hagan Place, he left behind a grey Nike-branded cap which police are forensically examining.

The offender is known to remove the coin holders and ashtrays from vehicles and some have been found in parkland around Latham. Should a member of the public locate any of these items, they should contact Police Operations on 131-444.

Police are urging any witnesses who may have seen a person answering this description acting suspiciously in the Latham area to contact Crime Stoppers.

If you can help police contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

The Turner Bowling club thieves also fit the description of the two people that held up the Belconnen Soccer club last week. Same weapons.

…And the Calwell club, and wasn’t Royals Weston done over too, sounds to me like they were planning to do the rounds

I’m definitely taking a knife with me next time I go walking at night.

If you’re found with a concealed weapon, under the Crimes Act you need a ‘reasonable’ excuse.
Take a decent-sized quality torch instead, it then has dual purpose as illuminator and ersatzbaton.

I’m amazed and appalled at how many of these bashings there’s been over the last 9 months or so. I’m definitely taking a knife with me next time I go walking at night.

It sounds like they know exactly who they’re after in the last one

isn’t that too much for one day?

Three North beats one South or is that the other way round?

That’s a shame, wouldn’t it have been easier on us all if it had ended tragically, with the two departing the scene in body bags.

amen.

What about getting up at 1am when you hear someone entering the house, take off all your clothes and run around with a hard one screaming I’m horny!!

Until you realise it’s your teenage son or daughter sneaking in after curfew…

But the sudden noticeable number of home invasion during the early hours of the morning is very disturbing. What happen to the appeal of an empty home during business hours when the occpants are likely to be at work or school?

Because you need to stand over the dealer to get them to tell you where their stash is.

It always makes wonder. You must have something pretty worth stealing to warrant a home invasion! Its a whole new ball game as far as criminal activity goes, and I guess crims wouldn’t take the risk if the ‘reward’ for that wasn’t up there.

SheepGroper – I would think it is common sense to lock your doors also when you go to bed. Although windows you wouldn’t always think of.
I had someone break into my home and rob me while I slept in bed. they climbed through an unlocked kitchen window. I awoke as they were leaving. Very scary experience.
I now have a dog who I kid myself will protect me. (he is scared of his own shadow) But at least he would alert me if someone attempted to enter the house.

I thought that was common sense? Unless you’ve got a camera set up you wouldn’t know what happens on your grounds at night. One workmate discovered the area of raked earth and grass seeds that was smooth the previous night had footprints in the morning, someone had wandered from the neighbour’s back yard through his, passing by his bedroom window, during the night. His wife was freaked out when she saw the sight.

Okay, I think most Canberran’s have come to accept that they’re risking themselves of being mugged and/or assaulted if they decided to wander outside late at night. Such is the fact of life at the moment.
